The head unit powers all of them, the infinity system uses separate amplifiers on each of the speakers. Not quite sure how they did it, but when I helped my friend with a 2nd gen with the infinity system each speaker had its own amplifier connected to it.

Yep. Which makes replacing speakers in an Infinity system a pain.

When I pulled mine out only the front had amps.

It was my understanding that only the front had individual amps.

I rewired them all and said to hell with the stock setup

So setting up an Infinity head unit on a non infinity system could be challenging?

It all depends. If the infinity head unit has its own amp it should be easy

Wouldn't the generic head unit wiring be the same?... the only difference should be the addition of a power and ground at the speaker for the on speaker amps.

Could be. But the infinity system has tweeters in the pillars. Non infinity wouldn't have that wiring I suspect
