Default Exhaust component pricing

So I've been pricing out the parts I need for my new exhaust system (headers, Y-pipe, CAT, muffler, tailpipe, tip, etc).

The Magnaflow 3" CAT Back stainless steel system is the most expensive portion at ~$600.
But if I get the muffler, tailpipe, and tip separately, I can get it for ~$250.
The obvious difference is the tailpipe does not include the hangers... I can't see hangers being worth $350, and my old hangers look pretty good (guess I'll be reusing them).
To be fare though, I think the difference is the system also has a polished muffler, but still, that's a lot of money for a shinny can that's under the truck out of sight (and wont stay shinny for long).

The individual stainless steel components will a good savings.

Have you found other situations where buying individual components has been cheaper than a system/kit?

My cat was only $110 compared to $500+ with a cat and y-pipe.
