So I did my cam swap on the weekend of the 4th. Since then I have noticed a great increase in fuel mileage. I fill it up every two weeks now where before was once a week. I usually pull a 17ft bass boat at least 40 miles if not 80 every weekend. So I haven't checked the mpgs in normal driving conditions yet but I did check them this past weekend while pulling my boat. I pulled it a total of 80 miles which was two round trips then filled up Monday morning and I got 16 MPG pulling a boat. I was very surprised considering I was in 3rd gear on anything that wasn't perfectly flat or downhill. I am very interested in my mileage under regular conditions.

 

Wow, that's pretty significant for just a cam change...... or did you do other mods at the same time? What was your mileage before?

 

There is for sure an increase as long as you don't go all out for the biggest cam ever. A decent cam will show you an increase as well as any mod as long as you don't go crazy. If your cruise RPM matches up well with the peak torque RPM of that engine with that cam, then you'll see a nice increase in MPG. It's all about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volumetric_efficiency.

When I put a cam in my old muscle car it went from 14mpg to almost 20!

 

I did the cam and timing chain. I did not port or polish anything. I did new cap and rotor, cam sensor, all with brass electrodes. new oem plugs NGK FR4, 8mm wires, bosch O2 and I cut the egr tube crimped it and welded it across. I cleaned my intake with oven cleaner and cut a plate out on the water jet for it so the plenum is fixed. And a 180* thermostat. Before normal driving I was getting 12 combo of highway and city. Tomorrow I will fill up again and give some numbers. I have noticed a huge increase in TQ below 3000rpm and a HUGE increase in HP above 3000rpm.

 

good to know. i would love to get one of those cams for my truck but don't want to put out the money. it is easy to see why you are getting better gas mileage. that cam is design to work from 700-4800rpm which is were a truck actually works.

I catch myself a lot now giving it he11 and look down I'm turning 5000 and still gaining power.

 

im liking the looks of this!! i just put a top end built 360 in my truck. im hoping my mpg's are this good.. if i ever get the chance to completely fill it.

That's a pet peeve of mine... not just that gas prices go up, but that some stations have a fill limit of $80, so I don't get a full tank.

The place closest to my house is like this, and not only is it fill, but it's daily, so if I fill my wife's Dart in the morning, I get the short end of the stick if I need to fill my truck in the afternoon... they sure know how to loose customers.
