The Official 2014 2nd Gen RAM Forum OT thread
I just got a Gateway M275 laptop/tablet. When I first got it it had less than a gig of ram so I ordered 2 more gigs but only one will fit in the memory socket at a time. I put one in and the machine recoginized it straight off and runs much faster now.
Originally it came with windows 2000 in it but has been upgraded to the windows 7 home premium 64 bit version. So it still runs a little slow.
When I first got it every time I would close it even if I had it in tablet mode the damn thing would shutoff. Finally I found a yahoo forum where folks were talking about this and figured out how to reset the power options so the screen saver never goes on and the computer never shuts down unless I make it do so also dehonkled the hibernate feature and removed the password thing too boot.
Now I like the machine much better. I've got it set up in the bedroom now so I can play the relaxing sleep music on youtube for my wife. She can also look at the pictures of horse son horseclicks.com, horsevill.com, and equinenow.com like she likes to do.
With the additional ram she can even watch the videos on those sites with no problems.
I used to have a Dell D-610 in there running XP pro but it got so loaded with junk it was terrible slow. I reset it to the original configuration, it got much faster and the kid made off with it. I think it had either 2000 or maybe Vista. I bought it with a larger hard drive already installed {200 gigs} and a full gig of ram in it. That's the most the machine will recognize or I would have put more in it.
Ram is a pretty cheap way to get better performance out of a lot of the old, slow, computers, sometimes it works out great, others times not so much.

I'm surprised that it is running windows 7 at all whatever the bits are and that it does this well with only one gig of ram. Further investigation tells me that there were different mother boards used in the newer machines that could take up to 4 gigs of ram in two separate boards.
I tried to put the two gigs I got for the gateway in the dell but they are totally different. Won't work with any of my desktops either. My younger sister might be able to use the one I have that is spare just now, not real sure what her machine runs in it.
If nothing else it might be handy to have on hand in case I blow this board up or get another lappy that needs the ram.

Well, since it is running 64 bit, that means the windows can handle over 4gb of ram. As for the motherboard, a little investigation might be handy to find out what it can do. I recommend ready boost as a possible solution. Basically using a usb stick to supply more ram to your machine. Based on the fact you are only running 1 gig on there, it would probably be useful for you! Might want to look into it.
