If it's a dual core 99% guarantee it's 64 bit capable ("long mode"). Windows 2000 supports dual core CPUs albeit only in 32 bit.

 

Well yes, but during windows 2000's life time.. both dual core and or 64 bit compatibility were somewhat rare.

 

It seems I may have been wrong about the original OS for the machine. Vista or XP were originally installed but this particular one had had a hard drive failure so the owner had 2000 on hand and ran it for a while.

I thought there were hardware issues for running some OS's on some machines {for a time I tried to load and run 95 on a dual core desktop (so I could play my Command and Conquer game) and while it did load and run it was slower than the PII I originally had 95 on.}

It was the eBay ad that said it waswindows 7 Home premium 64 bit. The system information in the computer is different. Maybe the seller just didn't know the difference?

From what I have found on the net there were different mother boards with different configurations of processors and such so there might be some that will load two separate memory boards, but this one only has room for one.

I just spent some more time looking around on line and see there were a whole bunch of sub models of thismachine. Starting with the the plain M275 then the M275X and goingto the M275XL with a few in between. This particular model only hasroom for one memory module so it looks like one gig is as big as will fit and work. But that's alright it runs fine with what I got now. Still a little slow but faster than the Dell D610 was.

 

^Windows 95 does not support hyper threading or advanced ACPI so it would run slower on a newer CPU as the CPU would have to go into legacy mode - not a good idea.

Also many of the newer CPUs do not have MMX technology and true math co processors. If they don't have either of those they will be slower at gaming and audio/video and audio/video processing. The math co-processor makes compiling a breeze.

I know for a fact that my old Pentium 3 with MMX and true math co-cpu could run circles around my Dad's brand new AMD Phenom III Quad core that didnt' have a math co-cpu nor MMX technology for audio processing and software compiling.
