common law = if you live with someone for something like 5-7 years they consider you married and when she leaves she can take half of your stuff just like a divorce...

wouldn't be surprised if they could get spousal support too...(aka vaginamony)

ahhh i see. I have heard of this before just not by that term.

Yup it's pretty much like marriage these days. That's what I was referring to.

It's marriage without the ceremony. Down here, if you claim her as your wife, you're married. Register in a hotel or motel as Mr. & Mrs., and that's it, you're married.

I think each state may have their own laws on common law marriage, I think in Ga it's 10 years or something like that...

I know in Ontario if you live with someone for over a year and split they can still take half your stuff. I don't know if that's common law though. I believe I've been 3 years for Ontario.

Yea there isn't any common law in VA. However they do recognize common law from other states

Common Law in KY is 7 years.

common law in NH is 6, or 7 years. this is where i fall under now.
