Default Engine for Torque

If I wanted to build a 360 for torque, I'd want the clearwater heads with 1.92 valves (not 2.02), stock intake, a cam and a tuner, correct? Was talking to a guy earlier who was claiming he was actively building 7 cars, he was claiming that bigger valves would be better. 1.92 is what I'd want, right? Would aftermarket rockers or throttle body hurt torque?

It all depends on the whole build.

You could go giant valves and if you put a big enough cam in it would still have torque.

But yes generally larger valves are for more high end speed at higher rpms. And the smaller valves and long runners of the kegger pack tons of air in at low rpms but they starve at higher rpms.

Depneding on how much work you do. you could keep the kegger or go with an m1 and Hughes. And get more low end torque then stock and gain considerable other power.

But if you just want a mild build then yes stock valves and kegger and a good thumper/rv cam and you will have tons of torque down low.

Also stall has a lot to do with it if you have an auto

If you want to build your 5.9 for lots and lots of torque you need to stroke it to a 408 or a 426.

What if you exchanged the rv cam for 1.7 HS rockers? The problem Im having is when I shift from 4th (3000 revs) into 5 th (Revs drop to 1800-2000) getting it moving from there is slow.

1.7's will change how far the valve opens, but not when it opens (and closes).

Stock (for a 5.2 at least) I believe is;
Duration @ .050" Lift = 251°/264°
Valve Lift @ 1.6:1 = .432"/.432"

Valve Lift @ 1.7:1 = .459"/.459", but the duration is unchanged.

Get a CompCams 20-744-9 and you have;
Duration @ .050" Lift = 206°/212°
Valve Lift @ 1.6:1 = .480"/.480"

If i go with a compcam for my 5.9 then I should stay with the stock rockers? or put in the 1.7s ?

What's the benefit if I just used the 1.7?

From reading your signature what was your most productive mod?

If you get a cam for your 5.9, don't put in 1.7s because you'll be getting your lift from your cam and not your rockers. If it were me, and I was installing a cam in my 5.9, I'd go with the 1.6 Harland Sharp Adjustable Rockers. Those are roller rockers, opposed to the current stamped rockers, and the roller rockers reduces friction and frees up some HP.

1.7 roller rockers will also increase duration at .050 lift. The higher ratio gets them open faster, and holds them open longer. It's a lot like installing a bigger cam. (in fact, it is exactly like that.....) JUST doing the rockers is usually good for about 10hp/tq. If you are changing the cam, use the manufacturer recommended rocker ratio.

1.92 are the smaller valves. An engine is a air pump, the more you can move threw it the more power. Although most mods you will benefit in the the upper rpm range more cfm will benefit low also depending on how the rest of the motor is built. If you can get the bigger valves without a major increase in price i would get them! No one mentioned exhaust yet, Any plans for that? Shorty headers are better for low end.

You can see the difference in cfm with the 2.02 valves compared to the 1.92's This is for the Indy X heads but it's just an example.

how much of the runners did you remove when you did your kegger mod? Im looking for more power in 4th gear 1800-2500 rpm range powering up to 5th gear and so on. 1st through 3rd i could pull a house down but 4th is a dog to get it off 1800 rpms . She moves but its slow.
