Default favorite ODBII scan tools

I've started seeing the P1740 code. I have a basic code reader eraser but don't have one that displays the live data, or can control the trans solenoids needed to do diagnostic work.

Any recommendations?

I'm looking for something less than the price of a transmission with enough features to access all the stuff on the Ram ABS airbag etc.

I have a new to me 2001 ram 1500 5.9 46re 4x4

I recently replaced the, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing set, timing cover, harmonic balancer

I have heard good things about OTC tools and own few of their pullers.

I'd love to own one of those though since I'm not doing this professionally it would seem out of place to spend more on a tool than the truck would sell for.

Since I only own domestic vehicles, and rather old ones at that not having can bus or support for imports would not be a deal breaker.

Is there anything in the $200 range that is worthwhile?
I'd like to be able to view live data and dump it to a pc if possible.

At present I plan to
change fluid & filter
adjust bands
remove check valve and install an spin on filter

considering purchasing a transmission pressure gauge set

If all that fails I can get a core from the salvage yard for $100 and start rebuilding without having to be without a vehicle.

I have an OTC 9450... You can find them just under $100 if you look around.

You can get a cheap, generic code reader for less than $20 on amazon. I have one just to carry around in the car. I also have an Actron that reads both OBD1 and 2 and does real time sensor reading, graphing, trending, etc. that cost about $600 new. I got it off ebay for $300.

Here's an existing thread in the General Forum that discusses scan tools:
