I worked at one when I was a junior in high school. Manager always had two people at the pumps. One to pump gas and handle the $ and credit card knuckle buster and the other to wash windshields and check/top off fluids and air.

I can remember when the first self serve station opened in upstate NY. Had the little hut in the middle where one employee sat surrounded by pumps.

Even though they tended to be a dime or so cheaper per gallon than full serve because their labor costs were a fraction, everybody I knew stayed clear and predicted their demise - at first. LOL...
Yep. I ain't exactly a spring chicken either. I remember when there was no such thing as self-serv...... Now, I don't know of a single full-serve gas station anywhere around here. I don't even remember the last time I saw one..... Yeah, it's been a while.

I can still get 1.97 at Walmart at home. I hear the barrel is going for less than $20 now. Last year this time or was what, $100 a barrel?
And the last time oil was under 40 bucks a barrel, we paid less than a buck a gallon at the pump....... What I find even more curious is, the price per barrel went down 10 bucks per, yet, the price at the pump jumped 50 cents a gallon overnight not so very long ago...... Supposedly, there was a 'problem' at a refinery. Personally, I think it was a manufactured problem, so the oil companies could gouge us for some more of those fat profits they have gotten used to. After all, wouldn't want to break the trend of record-breaking profits every quarter, now would we?

It's all about the money. Lol. I think we are still lowest per gallon/liter/parsec. Lower than anyone in the universe. Yet we still bitch.

Of course we do. (parsec is a measure of distance....) But then, I remember paying 13 cents a gallon for gas. 50 cents WOULDN'T FIT in my motorcycle. I could fill up the tank in my Challenger for less than 10 bucks....... Now, ten bucks will last me about three days........ and I don't drive that much.

You guys make me laugh, because I picture you like this:

Except I'm right up there with you, and the kids probably see us like this:

Gas was anywhere from $0.68/gal - $0.72/gal when I was a senior in high school. $10/week kept the slant-6 Volaire running for a week with all the driving I did.

Well, I went out this morning for a load of top soil for a project I have going on around the house and passed the station I listed prices from in my OP.

Gas went down to $2.09, $2.29 and $2.49

Diesel went up a dime to $2.55 - WTF???

When I got my license I can remember gas being around 65 cents. I had a 1978 Honda Hawk 400cc bike at the time and I can remember pulling up to a pump, scrounging up a buck in loose change to ride all weekend...

I'm sneakier. I've got a corner lot and there's a speed ditch at the corner. Everybody in their little 4 bangerdrives across my lawn to avoid bottoming out. Now, I don't begrudge coming a few feet into my grass to not bottom out, but I've fixed ruts 20' and more up into my yard from people cutting that corner.

So I put 35' of split rail fence up at the corner. Sunk the posts in concrete and have a nice, semi-hidden rebar coming up 18" along each post. I gave 'em 8' from the ditch to avoid it. I'm waiting for some dumb a$$ to hit that thing one night. LOL...
