Default ENGINE rebuild prep work / thought process

What is the best way to clean an engine block / engine internal parts before reassembly ? (gas and clean rag?) What is the best assembly lube? Should I use non-detergent break-in oil on initial startup or is SAE 5-30 or 10-30 fine ? . Thanks

Best way is to send it all off to the machine shop to be hot-tanked, and thoroughly cleaned. Using gasoline is just a tad dangerous.

There are a couple companies that make specific assembly lube. Most parts stores will carry some flavor of it. Be generous with it.

Can I use gas and clean non fiber rags or the papertowels? It's been hot tanked before just has some shop dust on it. I don't wanna spend more on it to be hot tanked and my machine guy said 2 months for a 69 455 block I sent there for machine work lol . Comp cam assembly lube good? And non detergent break in oil ?

Think I would be more tempted to use something a bit less flammable. And then either paint it right quick, or wipe it down with an oily rag, to prevent rust. (I have mineral spirits in my parts washer..... Yeah, flammable too, but, you have to be a bit more determined. )

Comp Cam stuff should be good. Just make sure it is general assembly lube, and not specifically for cams/lifters.

Can you even GET non-detergent oil any more? I haven't seen it here for quite a while..... In all reality, just using a good quality dino oil should be fine. Change it after 500 miles.
