Well, I think it's time for me to remove me head liner and have a bare ceiling. The previous owner took a reciprocating saw to the roof to install a sun roof. Well, when he did that he trashed the headliner, it hangs down all over the place, and he cut huge sections of the head liner board out, so there is no fixing that, and I don't really want to spend the coin on a plastic headliner board right now (would be awesome though), so I think it's time to pull the ceiling out. Getting tired of having the fabric resting on my head whenever I'm in the truck. Anyone else running no headliner in their truck?

 

I cut a hole in the roof of a Toyota Hilux pickup once. Among the dumbest thing I've ever done. The kit I got for the sunroof was hard to make leakproof and the glare from the sun absolutely scalded my eyes!

Sounds like you don't have much choice but to pull the failing headliner out. Probably you could get some foam backed headliner material and a liner board from a wrecking yard. If you would do that, use automotive grade (heat tolerant) contact cements. Comes in spray cans.

 

Yeah, I agree, I think it was stupid to cut a hole in the roof. I've had the truck for 2.5 years and it hasn't leaked on me, but the previous owner had sealed it up with silicone. I'd like to go back over it and try to clean it up some to make it look better.

I do think I'll remove it, but you have a good idea, pull a liner board from a wrecking yard and use it. I'll have to be on the lookout for a good liner board.

 

You have to remove the seats(and trim) to get the head liner out of a extended cab(In one piece anyway). This is probably why it wasn't removed.

 

I drove a few days with it out when I was redoing my headliner
and had the same thought. Slightly more road noise and I thought the radio didnt sound as good. Florida sun also baked hotter on my black truck with no liner. I think a junk yard board and recovering yourself is the way to go. Dome light and other minor things just didn't feel right. I think I used 4 cans of spray adhesive on a regular cab but it's holding up great and it's been over 5 years.

My radio doesn't work anyway... At least I'd be able to listen to road noise...

 

My old 95 Dakota had no headliner and no carpet. @ 17 it didn't bother me with m/ts on it... to be honest, the inside was like a tin can echo chamber. It was livable, but I wouldn't do it on a daily. (I bought that one that way.)

 

You can buy a can of 3m super 77 spray adhesive to put the headliner back up for a bit. But if it were mine I'd tear the headliner out too.

Save up to have it installed. It's loud without a headliner.

 

Yeah, I'm thinking about pulling it out and putting sound dampener panels up for now. Truck isn't my daily, so I'm in no hurry. I've got a couple of fluid leaks on the truck I should fix first though.
