I used to be on this forum a lot, but after a F4 tornado ripped through my town and totaled my truck I stopped visiting. I’m glad to say I’m back with another 2nd gen! Yesterday I picked up a 99 1500 4x4 with 57000 miles on it for only $4000. Can’t wait to get some miles on her.

The only issue now is when I use 87 octane fuel I get pinging when stomping on the gas. I have it as the shop right now.

That's common as you probably have the death flash. I think the only way to get rid of it is to buy a tuner.

Death flash was to get rid of spark knock. Probably some other issue causing it. Could be carbon in the combustion chambers, dirty fuel injectors, blown plenum, etc.

So the shop I took it to messed with the timing a little and it has helped, but there is still some slight spark knock. This truck spent a lot of time sitting so I am wondering if it has dirty injectors. I plan on looking down the throttle body to check and see if there is oil down there and also pull and clean the injectors. If that doesn't fix it, what are my options?

Timing is not adjustable on these trucks. It is purely controlled by the PCM. Moving the distributor will change INJECTOR timing. (fuel sync) The PCM is not very tolerant of fuel sync being wrong. You get a plus or minus 7 degree window that the PCM can tolerate, beyond that in either direction, and you start to get problems.

Might want to see what heat range the plugs are in it. Then drop it down some and see if it helps.
