Default Inspecting a used Ram 1500

Hello folks!
I'm looking at a 2001 Ram 1500, 5.2l, automatic with ~150k mi on it to use as a work truck of sorts.

Cosmetically it looks OK on the outside, still waiting on more pics though. But that's not a huge concern for me just as long as its no too beat up.

I know the transmissions on these trucks can be problematic, and that is my main concern... I've also heard that ball joints are common failure points as well. What other things in particular should I be looking for when I go to take a look at it?

What I do know so far is that it allegedly needs an O2 sensor (so I will be bringing a scan tool to check codes). The owner also claims that it has a new ECU, and just had a transmission flush (good or bad sign?).

bring a scan tool that can check the obdII monitors. any not run and passed indicate the owner cleared codes; faults may be present that haven't matured.

Trans flush? Or just a trans service? I really don't like flushing automatic transmissions, tends to be a prelude to failure.......

2 or 4 wheel drive? (from the pics, it looks like 2)

Check everything you would on any other high mileage used car. Also, pull the air filter housing off, and take a gander down the throttle body. (only need a screwdriver for that.) See if you see any oil pooling in the intake.

Take it for a drive. Get it FULLY warmed up. Drive it on the freeway. (if there happens to be one handy......) Drive it thru residential areas, and make sure the trans behaves nicely.

Make sure it doesn't make any rude noises.

It's a 2 wheel drive, and the seller's exact words were "transmission fluid change", so I guess just a service is most likely.
I just noticed earlier he updated his post to say 250k miles instead of 150k... Which is a bit concerning, but it still seems like a pretty good deal if everything checks out mechanically.
He's only asking $1,250, and says he needs to get rid of it by this weekend as he's leaving the state, so I think I will have plenty of negotiating power...

If it's the original trans, its pretty much at the end of its service life, so, figure a rebuild, or replacement in your negotiations as well. That, and the motor is likely getting tired as well. At that mileage, I would be real tempted to just pass, and find something else. If you can get it for 500 bucks, it may be worth it..... figure EVERYTHING that hasn't been replaced on the truck already, is worn out, and in need of replacement. Unless he has extensive service records, its quite likely a money pit, looking for a new home.

That's what I'm hoping isn't the case... I'll be going to look at it tonight after work most likely, and I've got a list of things to inspect. I've also been researching how much everything costs to fix/replace and I plan to use that for negotiation purposes. If it hasn't had the suspension gone over before I wouldn't be surprised if it needs all new ball joints and bushings. This being California, I've also priced a new catalytic converter in case it needs a new one to pass smog...
The more I think about it I may be better off looking at some other options, but I guess if I can get it really cheap it might be worth considering. Can't hurt to take a look I guess. Most of the "consumable" parts I can deal with, but if I find even the slightest hint of a weak engine/transmission I think I'll just walk away...
