Default intake

the truck is great I put a new exhaust on it change the oil on a schedule and just replaced the air filter and spark plugs. it only has about 130000 miles on it and ive had it for 4 years and I'm thinking about putting a new air intake on it its only a daily because its a 2 wheel drive 5.9 so I don't really care about horsepower until I can really get in there and rebuild the engine with a stroker kit but i was wondering if a new air intake was worth it or should i just keep it how it is till i have the money to really get in there and do it right and any recommendations for intakes I'm a pro and fixing broke things not so good at researching upgrades.

The whole 'cold air system' thing is pretty much a waste on a stock truck. It still draws air from the same place, and you are still limited by the intake manifold design. It will make the intake louder, but, it won't produce any more power, regardless of the claims the manufacturer makes.....

thank you but does that mean it would be more beneficial to replacer the intake manifold

Depends on what else you do. JUST changing the intake won't do much.... and then there is the EXTREMELY limited options for a replacement... You get the hughes air-gap, and that's about it. And even at that, all it will do is move your powerband up the RPM range a ways. You'll lose a fair bit of low end just changing that.....

I guess I never saw the Keg as a limiting factor as far as power goes, it is definitely a low end power design (fitting for a truck motor), but overall he's right. The intake system is not very restrictive with stock cam, heads ect

If you are planning on a build though, it doesn't hurt to start somewhere, you can purchase the cold air intake and install it immediately and get use from it. Not just store it while you accumulate everything else

The volant intake I have has an additional "scoop" pipe you can buy that pulls from beside the radiator, not sure its worth the money though. Factory air pulls from the fender that comes out behind the headlight, seems like a pretty descent scoop already in play on the factory system

The improvement in performance that the "cold air intakes" claim is mainly from the filter they use. If will flow better than a stock style one will. You can use a K&N filter in the stock air box and run a piece of flex tubing to a hole in the radiator support. I would start with headers and a better exhaust. What Is your "new" exhaust?
