Default Check Engine light comes and goes...

Hey everyone, I'm brand new here and a brand new owner of a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, 4x4, Shortbox, extended cab, 5.9L...anyway my check engine light randomly comes and goes. Any ideas? I did a search and I read the coil may be going, but wouldn't that cause the light to constantly be on? Thanks,

Sage

I am not sure if your Ram can do the,............ on-off-on-off-on.....key thing to retrieve trouble codes.

I loaned my manual to a fellow df'er and it's too late to call and have him email that page to me. Someone on here will post it, I would bet.

Good luck with your ride.

Is it blinking at random and then ceasing? If so, then you have a misfire.

Mine does the same thing and when I check the code it tells me its an O2 sensor (both have been replaced). It has been doing it since I bought it with 52,000 on it and now I have104,000.

Check all of your ground connections. The most odd code can come from a dirty ground.

It's a way to pull OBD codes from the PCM using the ignition key ... you can't do it cause you have a 98. You have to get a code reader (or go to a place that will pull them for you).

Thanks, I am not to worried about because it doesn't affect the performance of it..I just put a piece of electrical tape over it and don't see it!

That's the worse thing you can do, because one minor problem can swell into costly repairs. It's a domino effect. Go to your local FLAPS and have them pull the codes. They do it for free.
