Default 97 speedometer quit/ no brake lights though

I searched, but almost everything I read was for 98 and later.

Anyway, my speedo quit working and the check engine light came on. The abs or brake light didn't come on and I don't have any problems with shifting or jumping into neutral. I went to Autozone and came up as a speedo sensor. From what I have read the sensor on the differential won't put out a code and the sensor on the tranny will cause shifting problems. The speedo doesn't work at any speed. It's a 97 with a 5.2l 4x4.

So what sensor do you guys think I should go for?
thanks,
motox

I have a 99 so this may not help, but I replaced my rear ABS sensor on top of the diff. and my speedo worked fine after that.

Motox ... my understanding of the pre-98's is that you actually have 3 sensors ... one on the diff (RWAL) and two on the tranny. One of them is electronic and will set a P0720 (Code 15 on 97 and back). The other one is mechanical (has the gear on it) and actually runs the speedometer. The third one is the one you need to be concerned with.
