Well, I bought this '98 Cummins 4x4 about 3 weeks ago and am enjoying it. The other day I took it out in a field that had a low grassy area and when it started up the other side it started spinning. No problem, just put it in 4wd, right? Wrong! I noticed that there wasn't any additional traction, so I got out and looked underneath and the front drive shaft is GONE! When I called the dealer he said they've had trouble with people stealing parts off of vehicles and that he'd pay for one from a wrecking yard.
The dealer tells me that the donor vehicle must have the same axle (Dana 60 in my case) and the same tranny (47RE). Can anyone verify this, or does it simply need to be a Gen 2 truck with an automatic tranny? Gotta get a replacement before I REALLY need 4wd and don't have it.

Get what he tells you. I believe the T-cases for the heavier duty trucks were different than the 1500's.

 

Your t-case and front axle are different from mine. Also, I don't know if the slip joint is the same or not but there might be a different one for standard cab and club cab models.

 

if hes payin anyways then do whatever he says..... if you get one off an identical truck it takes the guesswork out.

 

Let me clarify... this truck came from an out-of-stateused truck dealer, not a Dodge dealer, but he's willing to pick up the tab for a used shaft. I called the localDodge dealer for information and they said that there are many different shafts and that it had to be from a truck with the same tranny and same axle, but I sort of wondered if this wasa ploy to buy it from the dealership since they want either $395 or $495 for a new one.
There is a wrecking yard that has a drive shaft from a'99 Cummins automatic, but that truck had the 46RE instead of the 47RE like mine has. Just kind of wondering if it'd be the same. Isn't the 47RE a heavier tranny than the 46RE?

But the driveshaft doesn't connect to your tranny. It connects to your t-case. I have a 1500 and your t-case is different from mine. I don't know for sure but I doubt my shaft will bolt to your t-case.

 

You're right, Aubrey, but a different tranny will probably have a different T/C, or if the T/C IS the same, maybe it will be slightly located a bit differently on a different tranny. Does anyone know the answer to this?

 

How did this turn out? I would have guessed that only the axle and xfer case would need to be the same ... unless each transmission positioned the xfer case farther forward or aft ... but I doubt that.
