I Need Help! Tranny Issues!
I bought a 2001 Dodge Ram SLT Laramie 4x4, it has the Off Road package. This is my first Dodge and I dont know alot about them. I know it has a 5.9 360 engine, it's automatic, and I think it has 4.10 gears. It has factory wheel and tires. The only things I've done to it werereplace the stock muffler with a 24 inch glass packwith echo tips, and change the oil and filter. The first couple of months this truck was great, but here lately i've had some problems. The truck developed a miss, and was running real rough, I found a vacuum leak on the top plastic hose on the passenger side of the firewall, I fixed it but it still ran rough. I changed the plugs and it started running good again. The plug on driver side, closest to the fire wall, (#7 I think), was burnt real bad. Then i noticed that the trans was acting kinda funny. When I first take off from a stop, it starts moving, but really doesnt pick up momentum till i get to about 1700 RPM. It also seems like it takes ittoo long to shift. When I'm rolling to a stop, I can feel the trans kick down real hard before I actually stop. I have felt trannys that were slipping, but this dont feel the same. At 70 mph I can nail the gas and it kicks down and accelerates fine. I alsohear another vacuum leak somewhere on the drivers side, but cant find it. Can the vacuum leak have anything to do with my tranny issues, that might be a stupid question but I dont have a clue. Also, I did the key off and on thing and it said PO307.I looked up the code and it said misfire in #7. Is this code displaying from the time beforeI changed the plugs, or is this something new? Can any of this stuff be related? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much. Kelly Adams
After you got done doing the work did you disconnect the battery terminal for a while? This will reset your computer and clear the code. Then if you have other issues the codes will be new.
I bought my 2001 ram used and the idiot I bought it from tried telling me that it had a 2500 stall converter in it. He was right, it barely moved until I hit 2500 rpm then it shot like a rocket...but it wasn't a stall converter, it was a blown trans and torque converter. All your symptoms are exactly like i had in mine, unfortunetly I think you may have the same thing I had. $2500 later and the truck runs like a dream....good luck with yours!!
Drop the trans pan and inspect, you may need a band ajustment on the kick down. If you large pieces of metal inside the pan, for a trans shop. As far has the misfire, replace just the one plug and switch number 5 wire to # 7 and #7 to #5. If the misfire stays on #7, replace the cylinder head. Dodge has had a big problem with cylinder heads over 70k miles.
