A change to a larger throttle body would not change the MPG of a vehicle that in daily driving has its throttle body more than 50% closed (throttled).

Learning what MAP (manifold absolute pressure) is and how it affects fuel economy and horsepower is routine for private pilots with gasoline engines, and all vehicle owners with gasoline engines would benefit from learning about it.

Part throttle operation is how your engine is operating more than 90% of the time on the road, even if you 'hammer it' at nearly every opportunity.

HankL, I did not notice any extra horse power after bolting on the Fastman 52mm, but I did notice that the engine ran better, smoother and accelarates smoother. My question to you is this, and it is a question not an argument. I agree on the point that 90% of the time we only use part throttle, but wouldn't a larger bore allow more air at part throttle than a smaller bore would? It seems to me and I'm no expert that if you increase the bore size of your TB that it will allow more air to flow in over a small bore using the same amount of throttle opening. I also did not experience better gas milage after the TB swap. The milage increase came after I replaced my worn out timing chain and fixed the plenum gasket. I did though notice right away that the truck ran better and smoother with nothing other than the 52mm TB. I don't want to start an argument, would just like your thoughts on this. Because it's something I can actually feel I have to beleive that it was beneficial to get the larger bore TB. Thanks, Jeff.

Things people sometimes forget:

1) Americans love affair with thier vehicles is nearly a century old.
2) Modding is a hobby, and like many hobbies, it does not make alot of practical sense.
3) Most of the mods we do have very little realeffect on daily driving. Agood percentage will have anill effect on daily driving as far as fuel economy is concerned. With respect to daily driving most of the
bolt ons have only a psychological effect.
4) Alot of guys really look forward to that 1% of the time, and want lots of air flow to make lots of hp
when they get to spend that time.

If you want a vehicle that is as close to 100% efficient as practically possible, then buy your choice of car or truck and leave it like it sits.

If you are one of the people listed in #4, then the Fastman or Hughes TBwould be a good choice.

50mm for the 318

I had this exact conversation with Dan Arkand ( The Fastman) over a year ago.

The 318, unless it has been modified with cam and head work should only take the 50mm.
The 360 has a couple options.
[ul][*]For pulling power, higher torque, stay with the 50mm.[*]For raw horsepower, go to the 52mm[/ul]
I stayed with the 50mm because my truck is set up to tow, not race.

I put a Fastman (50mm>318/5.2) and got about a 1-1.5 mpg increase plus gave a little more bottom end torque and it seemed to shift smoother. butdon't expect it to feel like a Turbo or something. most of the stuff you see on here is not radical just like to tinker and see if we can make them run better without spending an arm an leg. Dan (The Fastman) is good to work with.
