How close is too close?
Im gathering all the parts i need for my exhaust, and all i have left is the piping. Now i got a few questions i hope yall can help with. Is it bad to put the mufflers (10 series racing flowmaster) on a flange and connect it directly to the header? And my second question, im going to have the exhaust flanged on the header either way, so would it be benificial to remove the rest of the exhaust when i go to the track, or at this point would it just hurt performance?
flowmaster makesa muffler that connects directly to the headers, i forget the name but it's louder then the 10 series....i'd look into that, and sell me your 10 series. As for the flange ideal....you'd have to do a couple of runs with you exhaust hooked up and not hooked up to see how it really does, but imo your engine isn't producing enough backpressure (not high enough compression, blower, ect) to be very benifical to running open headers.....

as for the muffler, i dont want to change the sound of the exhaust which is why im going with the 10 series', but whats the main diff btwn a 10 series muffler and the direct connect ones?
i'm not quite sure about tone of them , i just heard that they are louder then the 10 series....i believe the main reason for them is the ease of less piping..but i'm not quite sure

so after all those mods you only gained 1mph over a quarter mile? can get a diesel.. spend 400 bucks for a good chip and run 2 seconds faster

The closer you install the mufflers to the headers the quieter the exhaust will be. It's not a lot, but if you had the time and money to try both set-ups you would see what I'm talkig about. Also, the muffler has a cooling effect on the exhaust gases and you will lose velocity. The closer you place the mufflers toward the front of the vehicle, the longer the cooler gases have to travel to exit the piping. This will make you lose power. Again, it's not much, and you may not even notice, but why make your performance gains suffer over something so insignificant?
