i have a 1995 ram 1500 5.9 with auto trans.it will not go into gear. you put it in drive and it just sits there.what could be causing this?

 

only thing i could come up with is maybe the linkage fell off or something.

One easy thing to do is pull the inspection plate and make sure the tc is spinning with the engine. Some times those bolts break.

 

is the tranny really low on fluid? I have seen many vehicles do this when the fluid is very low or in very poor condition (burnt).

 

Be sure the transfer box is 2hi or 4hi.

 

yeah, could be the t-case. or the linkage slipped or came off. Try to see if it'll move in R,N,2, or 1

Pulled the pan and there was no major metal just a few shavings, put new filter and new fluid and it ran fine for a 30 minute drive and now nothing again

I'd say the tranny is toast. You could try adjusting the bands. Get a Haynes manual and see if you have the right tools to do so.

 

Got the Haynes manual. I surely hope it's not toast. The first time this happened there was no warning, no slipping, was going down interstate and it just stopped pulling. After it sat all night, it went in gear drove it 2 or 3 miles and then nothing.
Changed fluid and filter sat all night drove it 30 miles or more then started again.
