Default BUY NEW OR REBUILD

I noticed my truck is making a bad grinding when accelerating today. It doesn't do it every time I get on the gas but, but I can make it do it by letting on and off the gas pedal. It sounds just like when someone can't find a gear on a manual trans mission and just grinds them. I'm pretty sure that it's the transfer case. Because I can put it into 4 high and it stops. Then as soon as I put it back into 2 high it will start doing it again. I'm wondering if this would make the transmission act up. Like make it get hot, and not up shift properly. What do you guys think. Rebuild it or just get a new/remanufactured one.

If you have a manual transmission the nut thats on the output shaft backs off causing a grinding sound, also theres a snap ring that break on the transfer box and causes a bang type sound and will go away when you put it in 4hi.

I starting to think it in the front axle. Like it's not disengaging all the way. My wife had the truck today and she said it's doing it more when you trun now. doesn't matter if it's in 4 high or not now.

What happens when you turn at low speeds? Does it jerk the wheel at all? Just guessing since you said front axle, are you sure it's not u-joints?

Yeah, the u-joints were one of the first thing I checked. Can the gears/gear that locks the front end be removed and driven without them to see if that is what my problem is? I'm sure I'll be able to tell once I dig into it but that won't be tell Sunday. Also is this why some people switch to a manual lockiing front end where you run the cable into the cab to lock the front axles instead of keeping it automatic like it when it's stock?

Update. It's been a long time since I've been on here. Anywho here's what the problem was. The vacuum lines that run to the front axle to lock front axle for the four wheel drive were loose. A couple of small zip ties to tighten up the seal form the rubber to steel lines fixed it.
