Default new cat

i have a rattling noise in my cat. would it be wise to buy a new one? it's over $600 for a new 'california' approved cat. i am going out junk yard shopping tomorrow, just for a cat. maybe the element inside busted up? anyone had this problem before? any easy fixes? thanks.

yea element is likely busted up. happened in my jeep wrangler. sorta sounds like a buncha bolts in a coffee can if you shake it up. I don't remember how much the new cat was it was about two years ago but I didn't need a cali approved one. i think it was in the 200's or so.

well, i found out that california law restricts the sale of used cats. so the first thing the salvage yards do is scrap the cats. bummer. looks like it's Summit then! thanks cify

check your local muffler shop for a no-name replacement cat that meets all ca. emissions laws. it might be cheaper than a brand name.

echseman, do you have a "California Emissions" certified truck? There is a decal on the radiator support. Do you have 4 O2 sensors?

well, it was purchased new in Montana, but it's registered in California. I will have to check... I know it has a few O2 sensors. My brother has a Ford f-450, and he gutted the cat, and it still passes. just a visual inspection for smog i guess.
