It's time for new Tires on my Off-Road
The time has come to do some shopping for new rubber on my 2001 Off-Road Edition.
The truck originally came from the Factory with 275/70-17's but when I replaced them 3 years ago the local tire store offered a great deal I couldn't refuse on a set of 265/70-17 Toyo Open Country tires. The Toyo's have been great performing and long lasting tires, but I have never really cared for the "look" of the smaller tires on a truck with a 2" lift.
So I'm just wondering what size tires you other guys with 17" rims are installing? And before anyone makes a too radical suggestion.....YES price does matter! I would like to stay around the $125 per tire price range.

I have a 2001 Off Road Ram and I am running 33x12.5x17 Dick Cepek Fun Country II's. They are a good size for the Off Road package and the price is not too bad either. I don't know what kind of tread you are looking for, but these are more agressive looking in person than they are in the picture. And they don't make too much noise for over the road driving either.

First, how do you use your tires? Off-road, highway only, ice/snow/rain, towing/hauling, etc...???
I've been running 285/70/17 BFG's, and did so with both my 2" lift and my current 3" lift.. You can click the link in my sig to see how they look with 3" lift. I think they look about right for 2" of lift, but start to look kinda small with 3". I thought about doing 33x12.50R17 for my next set so my tires would be wider, but most measure out smaller in diameter then the current 285's i'm running. I also looked at going with 295/70/17 or even 305/70/17. I probably would have gone with one of these last two, but decided to get 35's instead and take my lift up to 5".
Good luck finding anything over 275 (like a 285, 295, or a 305) for under $200 per tire, escpecially for an all terrain or a mud terrain. That's one of the drawbacks of 17" rims and bigger tires. I paid $240 or so for the BFG 285's i'm currently running, and $280 for the 35's i'm going to run (Toyo Open Country M/T's). Maybe look into Maxxis tires, they were one of the better priced 285's and 305's I could find. Nitto makes a 295, but it was over $200 too. I think Mastercraft are usually pretty cheap too. My experience with tires though is you get what you pay for. Tire might cost more, but if it is a good tire, it will last longer then a cheapo tire, saving you more in the long run.
Good luck.

Look at the www.jetzontire.com and look at the Tempera Trail Cutter MTs and the Dick Cepec II tires

I would also look at Hankook Dyna Pro MT's sold at Discount Tire. I had the 315/75/16's back when I ran a 35" tire and they were around $160.00 a peice and a great MT tire. It was a good tire for a daily driver because it was quiet and rode nice, but it also had an aggressive tread and MT design.
In case you have not heard of them, Hankook is a Korean tire manufacturer that has a great name abroad and now they have a USA presence. They were written up in Petersens 4Wheel and Off Road a while back and they loved them too and thought they would become very popular. Take advantage of their cheap pricing now while they try to get their name established in the USA.
