yes, if you change one, you have to change the other.(so im told) I would guess if the x-fer case had diffrent ratios for front and rear you could run diffrent, but then youd have to upgrade them at the same intervals anyways, so its prolly even front and rear.

well i know i half to change the front and rear gears (ring and pinion) at the same time but i was told that the 4.10 ring woundent fit into the dana 44 in the front on the 3.55 carrer (because of the diffrent ring and pinion size) but i havent herd of this before then i was looking and i fould a 4.10 for the dana44 whitch was made to go onto a 3.73 carrer and lower because it was thicker ring so im just wondering if anyone has changed theres out and what exactley they used in the front

What you were told about the D44 is correct. D44s use 2 different carriers, one is for 3.73 and numerically lower gears (your 3.55s) included and the other is for numerically higher gears, 3.90, 4.10, 4.56 etc. The reason you have different carriers is because of the size of the ring gear in proportion to the pinion gear. Now that said the Jeep Rubicons use what is called a "thick set" gears on their D44 that allows the use of the 3.73 carrier with the 4.10 gears, but I don't know much about them, you might want to ask a jeep person, which ain't me...

yah i found a set of 4.10 gears made for the 3.73 and lower carrer and they were thicker, i think i would go that root unless anyone knows a reson not to the 4.10 thick set is only about $10 more, a lot cheper than a new carrer

You can just get Thick gears for the D44 instead of getting a new carrier. Its way cheaper and won't make any difference.
