2001 Ram 4x4 Wierd Noises
I'm not too experienced in 4x4 trucks, so I have a few questions. Hopefully theyare related. Okwhen I'm driving slower than 25 mph everythings fine. But as soon as I go over, I hear kinda like a whirling noise. If I have the truck in 1st gear and drive at 15mph and then let off the pedal it does the same thing. I can't really tell if its a whirling noise or a light grinding noise, but I know its coming from the front end. I have a K&N Air filter that had one of the locking clamps come off so its kinda loose on the back end. A friend told me that might be making the whirling noise, but I am not thinking thats it.
The 4x4 light in my instrument cluster works when it wants to, so how can I tell if the truck is in 4 wheel or in 2HI? And if its in 2HI could this be the noise?
Whenever I am stopped, and I turn the wheel sharply, then drive forward, its kinda jumpy, kinda feels like I'm dragging something heavy.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Yeah, but the other thing is, I can get up to 60mph without the engine revving up like it would in 4X4.
On the way home a few minutes ago my trans. light came on then went off after about 5 minutes. Whats the deal now? New Transmission??? I hope not.
Also, when I plug in the Hypertech, it goes through its normal process and after it communicates with the vehicle it stops and says-Error 62. Then gives me a 1-800 number to call. I haven't had the time to call. Has anyone had the same problems?

I agree that the truck is in 4hi if the wheels jumpy. and even at highway speeds the truck (i dont think, cant remember for sure) wont rev up that high. it will be almost normal. And if your tran light came on, i wouldn't be driving to much til you figured it out. if your in 4x4 and on the highway that will probably heat up the tran enough to trip the light. the best way to make sure your in 2 wheel drive is to make sure the transfer case shifter is straigh up and down, if its pointing back towards the seat then its in 4 hi.
Can you feel it shift when you shift the transfer case lever. Maybe the linkage is not adjusted correctly. as far as getting stuck in 4x4, yes it is possable. If i remember correctly, do to the automatic hubs (I think they work on vacum) they can hang up. didn't even think of it til now...maybe one of your hubs is hanging up. If not both.

if its stuck in 4x4, check the vacuum lines to the CAD...
Also a jump means its def. in 4x4, or like what happened to me, 2 bad wheel bearings.
try putting it in 4hi, (truck in neutral) then shift back to 2hi, and go in reverse a few meters, this unlocks the 4x4 pretty easily...when ever mine stays locked up, i throw it in reverse, and it immidiatly disengages.
