Truck kept Shutting OFF, help??
Alright so most of you know I just picked this 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 up a couple weeks ago. It has the 5.9 liter engine in it, and it is a very nice running and looking vehicle. BUT, I experienced a scary problem with it today. I went to maaco today to go pick my truck up, i had been having them do some bodywork on it to make it look right. It had been there with them for an exact week. Anyway... as I was leaving MAACO's parking lot, the truck just shut off on me while i was coasting through the parking lot. It continued to do this as i exited the building. It wouldnt idle and just kept shutting off. So i went through some nearby neighborhoods to kind of get the fuel going through it, but it just kept shutitng off as soon as i let off the gas. Then after about 10 minutes of the truck shutting off and me starting it back up and giving it gas, it finally went back to normal and idled perfect. So this is my question, do you guys think maybe it did this bececause it was sitting at a collission center for a week and probably wasnt being run for very long periods of time, or do you think i should be concerned? Let me know what you guys think, your help, as usual, is always helpful!! thanks guys
clean out your IAT sensor on your throttle body. On my 97 this happened to me, whenever my rpms would drop down to 1000 or less my truck would die, i had to drive home 70 miles revving it up going thru towns and at red lights and stop signs. I finally got it home and cleaned out my whole throttle body and worked perfect. I talked to my mechanic about it and he told me i didnt need to clean the throttle body just the IAT sensor.
had that exact problem twice, both times the battery was at fault....there'sa TSB out on these trucks for this problem, PCM is apparently very sensitive to the battery's condition. even had a truck that would fire up and run under throttle fine, but wouldn't idle....all because of a loose battery clamp. but cleaning up the throttle body/sensors isn't going to hurt either.
Its not because its been sitting for a week....a week isn't a long peroid of time for sitting at all.
First take off your throttle body and clean the whole thing with carb or parts cleaner. Make sure to take off the MAP, TPS, and IACs too. Clean where the IAC goes really good, it can be hard to get all the way in the hole. Then wipe down the IAC itself really good.
BTW. The IAC (Idle Air Control) motor is the one of the back (fire wall) side of the TB.
If that doesn't fix it, it could very well be the battery.
