Default frame rust

i thought id start my own topic on this and get some help from everyone. my truck appears to have been a flood truck from the florida keys, so the frame, some of the body as well, is pretty heavy on rust. i want to try and fix this myself and i do have some knowlegde on bodywork but not frame. i thought about sand blasting but it is going to be to messy where i live now. i could grind it allbut what about the inside frame rails? i was going to remove the bed, mount the taillights on the bumper so i can driveto work this way whilestarting the clean up on therear frame. then once im donegrinding i would coat withsome undercoating.then the front do the best i could around the suspension parts. at one point when i do replace some of the suspension parts i was going to be able toget the hard to reach areas like mountingpoints for various parts but its hard to reach as is. most the suspension/steering is good but rusted.so like arms, leaf spring, sway bar,ect i was just going to replace at a later time.

has anyone had to deal with this before? my body isnt much better..under both doors both have rust. bottom of the door right before the fender i have a huge 2.5" hole from the rust.. i knowi know.. i planned to just grind this and spray with some rust converter for now so it doesnt get worse.

First off, wait more then 1/2 an hour before you post back asking 'Doesn't anybody know?!" Most people don't sit on here and hit refresh every 10 seconds to see what has been posted new. Usually people check 1 - 2 times a day.

Now, cleaning up the frame is really heard w/out taking the bed and cab off. Like you said, bed is easy to get off. Cab, not so much. Also sandblasting is the best way to do it, but a wire brush on an angle grinder works good too but not as good as sand blasting.

I made a write up a few monthes ago called something like "< $50 rust repair" so search for that. If your having trouble finding it just search my user name and rust repair.

it could be rusty because of the use of salt on roads in the winter? just an idea.

i helped a friend with his 94 dodge we just grinded it with a wire brush then put a good coat of rubberized under coating. seemed to do the trick.

Chrysler experimented in the 1994-1996 period with a type of wax on the frame instead of paint or galvinizing. My truck has this wax and it has chipped off in many places allowing the frame to rust.

Check out these links to reviews of POR-15 and its competitor Rust Encapsulator:

You know the black surface on impact sockets?
These products turn red-yellow hematite (rust) into this cousin of rust called magnetite, combined with some urethane (Gorilla Glue) to hold it together.

update:

well i tested some sanding and spraying undercoating in the front of the frame(where it had least rust) and it was going good. the rear of the frame is very bad. i dont even know if just sanding and coating will fix or even help. after sanding some of the rear rails it looks very weak so i stopped. i dont know im even thinking im going to have to find a new frame or something.

Give the POR 15 HankL suggested a try. I think RM_Indy's using it on his race truck. Ask him about it.
