Default Volant Cold Air Intake???

I called one of my good performance mechanics about getting a cold air intake installed on my truck. I told him I was thinking about doing the K&N, but he said that he prefers the volant cold air intakes. He said they aren't an open filter style like K&N, and that the filter is protected from heat and goes in the fender well. He said it's a nice product and will offer maximum performance for a cold air intake. Do any of you run a Volant Cold Air Intake on their 5.9L V8's?? Or do any of you have any more information on the Volant product, is it as good as my mechanic says it is? Thanks!

Ihave the volant on mine. i like it but never ran a K&N so i cant say if its better or not. it does have a filter that is encased and goes right into the existing opening in the fenderfor the stock air filter assembly. I also have the scoop for it (not hooked up yet) and it goes from the fender to the front of the truck, next to the radiator. So it will pull air from the front of the truck (coolest air) and it will pull air from the fender. I think its a nice setup. I noticed a little better throttle responce after installing it as well as a 0.5 mpg increase. That increase isn't just one time either, i track my mpg always. i have about 6 or so fill ups (after installing cai) that show at least a 0.5 increase. 1 was a .5 decrease, but thats after i put it on (heavy foot due to cool new noise). All and all i like the product. And i also have an 01 w/ a 5.9 but mines a 2500. Now that i looked at your sig, it says you ahve a K&N, were you going to get another one? Hope this helped ya.

No I haven't had any cold air intake yet, I wrote it in there though because it's what I thought I was going to be buying. So does the piece that goes to the radiator come with the volant cold air intake system as well? Or is that something you bought seperately. When you say scoop, do you mean you bought an aftermarket scoop for your hood? Sorry asking so many questions, just want to make sure I understand what your saying, because I am very intrigued by this product with what ya told me!

The scoop is sold separately, I believe. It's just a tube that runs from the filter box down to beside the radiator to pull cold air in for the front of the truck.

There is no scoop in this pic. It would attach to the round hole in the front of the air box.

I have a S&B intake on my truck (5.2L)

Filter element is encased in a box with a plexi glass lid, filter comes with the same warranty as K&N's (1,000,000 miles) you can clean it and reuse it etc.

I felt throttle response was better after the install over the stock system and my mpg picked up .5 mpg to 1 mpg (that is data I have gathered over 6 mo.)

hope that helps, I got mine from Verocious - there one of the Vendors on here.

Wow Ramdamit, that cold air intake looks great. Where would I go to find that other piece that goes to the raditor. I would be inclined to want that installed as well. Do you know if that piece adds considerable more horsepower, or is it not that much big of a deal. Other than that question, that looks awesome, I like how you can't see the filter, which means less cleaning and colder air!

the scoop is sold seperate. you can get it on volants website. its not that cheap...if i remember right its like 130 or something like that. i have that same setup right now as ramdamits picture. not sure if the scoop would add more power or better fuel mileage, but if i had to guess i would say that it would a little. i dont think it would be noticable tho. i think that the whole setup (CAI w/ scoop is about 300. now, your going to see that there is one for a 94-00 and one for 01. i bought mine used, from a truck that wasn't an 01 and it still fit fine. here is the link to the volant site
http://www.volant.com/product_intake...ypeField=Dodge
That will give you the info you need.

From your perspective, did you feel the extra horsepower gains? Also, K&N claims it gets 11.83 horsepower at 4200 rpms which sounds really amazing, do you know what the stats are for the volant cold air intake kit? Does it sounds nice in the engine bay too?

how long do you stay at 4200 rpm to feel that 11 hp ? to me a CAI is not worth the $$ besides the stock box is already a CAI.
