Default Exhaust Question

Hey guys, I'm a new Dodge owner...coming over from the Nissan family. I got a 2001 Dodge 1500 4x4, SLT Laredo, 5.9L Magnum. I'm not positive what the cab size is called...it's the bench seat in the rear with the 2 small suicide doors. Extended? Anyway, I'm looking for a good muffler choice. I want something that is aggressive, but not too overpowering. I had a 40series 2-chamber on the Nissan, and at highway speeds it was just too noisy. I am thinking about a Magnaflow, since they normally have a more mellow tone, but are more aggressive than stock. What seems to work for this type of application on the 5.9L? I will probably go with just a muffler, since my wife scoffs at the thought of me buying a 4 or 5 hundred dollar cat-back system. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the input. I had wondered about those 50 series. I have a friend with a '05 chevy, and he has the 40 series 2 chamber...says the same as you, not very loud on the highway. I am looking at the Magnaflow XL 3 as a possibility. It is about the same size as the stock muffler, 3 chambers, with a round shape...and better flow, of course. I'm not concerned with the outside noise, I just want to keep it low in the cab. I'll be sure to post something up when it happens.

keep your stock muffler and get pacesetter longtubes and offroad y-pipe. i would recomend getting a hi flow cat and fastmans aftercat sim. it is a fairly easy to do and well worth it.

Excellent timing! I just installed the Magnaflow 3" cat-back SISO on my 2001 2WD long bed and it's just loud enough to be irritating to me, especially when I have my Lance camper loaded. The camper seems to amplify the noise into the cab while cruising at highway speeds. I had thought about the 50 series but have decided to go with the 70 series. Tad louder than stock is all I want. Bear in mind I'm nearly 50 and have a low tolerance for interior resonance. 23 years of listening to fire engine and ambulance sirens and air horns does that sometimes!

You have a quad cab or club cab, heck I don't know.
I do kow that I'm using a Forza-Flow muffler with 2.25" piping with 3.5" tips and it sounds good and mellow.
A little rumble but nowhere near annoying. These mufflers have a better warranty than the Flowmasters and sound just as good.

Quad cab is what it should be called.

I had what I guess to be a 50 series muffler on my truck that I loved. It was pretty loud outside the truck and sounded great from the outside but on the inside it wasn't loud at all. If you got on the gas around 2k rpms where it was loudest you could slightly hear it inside. I had people ride with me that couldn't believe how quiet it was inside after hearing it on the outside. I loved it. The edlebrock air hat was louder than the exhaust.

I had to get my exhaust redone due to it rusting through and decided to just go ahead and get a new muffler put on at the same time and put a Flowmaster 40 series on as we thought maybe thats what I had. This thing doesn't seem much louder outside the truck maybe a little but inside the truck is quite a bit louder. With the windows up it isn't too bad but you do hear it unless you have the stereo or something cranked up. With the windows down it's pretty loud inside the cab. Going down the highway about 55-60 isn't bad but 65-70 on the interstate has it right in the rpm range where it's loud. It isn't horrible but it is quite a big louder inside.

If you don't want loud I'd go with the 50 series. I almost took my 40 off and put a 50 back on but after riding for a while with it I've grown to love it. I thought it would get really old but so far it hasn't.

Awesome, I really appreciate all of the input. Unfortunately, I can't mess with anything like headers right now. I bought a 3 yr warranty and I don't want to do anything until it's up. You all have been really helpful, and I'm sure I'll be looking for more advice in the future.

Where did you find the Forza-Flow muffler? I've been looking around and cannot find anything about these...not even a retailer! Also, do any of you know anything about Flowtech mufflers? I remember a guy who worked at an exhaust shop telling me about 'em, and he said he thought they sounded as good as Flowmasters, at a much cheaper cost. Any opinions?
