I'm driving a '97 1500 4x4 with club cab and 8' bed. Currently I have 245/75/16's on it, but they clearly don't fill out the fender wells. The local shops won't go bigger than a 265 without a 3" lift. Not really interested in lifting it since it's already got plenty of ground clearance. Have any of you put anything larger than a 265 on a stock 4x4 Ram? If so, did you have any problems with rubbing on the front? I'd like to go to a 285 BFG T/A's.

I went up to 285/75R16's on my 99 1500 4x4 and the only part that it rubs on are the control arms on a full lock turn. Other than that, you'll be alright going up to that size Go with the 285's

I'd been considering it all along, but wanted confirmation from someone who has actually done it. I'd hate to blow $750 on tires I can't use [:@] so I appreciate the feedback. I think I've read elsewhere that some folks had done the 285s.

It will also depend on the wheel size. I have a 97 4x4 but had 15x10's on there with 32.5x12.5x15. There was some rubbing against the plastic fender liner but no where else. I later went with a 2 in. lift (very easy to install) to get larger tires under my truck. I sold my old rims and went with a 16x8 rim with 305/70 - 16 and have no rubbing at all. If you go with the 2 in. lift and stock rims you can get 295/75 - 16 on there. The same diameter as the 305's just narrower. If you only want to go with the 285's then you should have no problem.

I'm on stock rims as well. Haven't done any mods to the truck beyond the spray in liner. Besides, sometimes I have to establish priorities and decide whether to support my truck habit, my computer habit, or my hunting habit. I'm primarily interested in filling out the fender wells without spending a fortune on mods. About due for new tires, so it's a wash on the cost there. Might consider the lift down the road, but it already has good ground clearance.

Did you have to have your ECM reprogrammed when you went to the 305's?

No I did not get my computer reprogrammed. I think all it will affect is the speedometer. I know mine has changed with the larger tires, but I just go with the flow of traffic. The 2 in. lift is not expensive. Get a front-end leveling kit $140 and an add-a-leaf for the rear $30. It took me about 30 minutes to install the front and about 2 hours for the rear (just because you have to unbolt the axle). I have also considered a Hypertech programmer. If I do decide to go with that then I can set the tire size in there.

I have a 95 with stock suspension and I have 33x12.5 MT/Rs on and I barely rub my control arms when I hit a turn hard and flex the suspension at the same time. I have 7x15 Mopar rims off a 2001 Ram Van. So you can clear 285's with no problem.

Kind of what I thought. Figured someone out there had tried it already, so no sense in reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

I know this is off topic but I just want to say something to that statement.
FYI: I have a '97 and I have a hypertech power programmer and it does not have the tire size or any speedometer correction features on it. Beyond the programmer it has the octane selector, rev limit, top speed and that is it (if I remember correctly). Definately no speedo corrections or trans controls.

I was running 305/70/r16's on my 98 4x 1500, and I only rubbed on hard turns or when I was out in the mud...They were 32.5 in tires, but I could run the BFG's 32.5 285/75/r16 without any problem right now, and that's on a factory suspension and rims
