Default Took truck in for 4wd not engaging- shop said TC chain slip?

Transfercase?? I was having trouble getting my truck into 4wd. It goes into 4wd on a lift (all 4 wheels off the ground) but, on the street/dirt/gravel I would go a few feet and hear a pop/clang. The shop said the transfer case chain is slipping. How does that sound to you fellas? Please post your opinion if you agree then please explain how this failure causes this to happen (pop) on the ground but, work on a lift?

Does that symptom sounds right for a transcase problem? the pop clang? and it will go into 4wd just fine with the wheels off the ground.

I've seen a few front drive shaft yokes where the splines were stripped. new yoke on the transfercase fixed it up.

How are your tires? Are they all the same size, brand? How about tread wear, is it even on all tires? The 4wd system on these trucks doesn't allow forANY ratio difference front to back, that's why they don't recommend engaging on dry pavement
