2001 2wd front hub loose
i did a search but didnt really come up with what i was lookin for but here it goes. lately i guess past month when hitting the brake from high speeds i felt like a vibration i just thought it was the rotor or pads being warped or something and figured next time i get a chance to drive to my parents house i would take a look at it well i jacked it up and turned out that the hub was loose(up and down movement) took it further apart to confirm it. went to the parts stores and no one has the hub and since i gotta drive back home tonight about 150 miles away i needed to try and rig it till i can get the part and replace it. well i put the wheel back on without the center cap to try to tighten up the big nut inside the rotor and sure enough i spun the wheel and tighten the nut up a little and the wiggle went away. but my question is that if these hubs arent supposed to be servicable why is there a nut on it like you would see on a spindle, why isnt there a castle nut and pin on it to keep it from moving, and also how tight should that nut be i know on spindles the nut shouldnt be tight much just snug and the pin keeps it in place. but any advice would be helpful as of right now i dont feel any wiggle in the tire but i dont know if the center nut should be real tight or not because i dont see how it stays on there.
wow really dam i wish i would have looked at this before i drove home haha but ok ill have to try that i tightend it down prolly to 25 pounds or so and it seemed to tighten a lot of the slack out but i didnt want to put a lot of pressure on the bearings because im not experienced in hubs and how exactly they are built. but what do yall think should i try tightening it to what it should be or just buy another one and replace it i know when i first messed with it it was loose like i prolly applied 10 lbs to it and it tightend. ive prolly put about 2-3k miles on it since i first noticed any type of vibration and even with tightening it to about 25lbs i still had a vibration just not as bad when braking. what do yall think
in your 01 2wd, its the unitized bearing, and the hub bearing nut should be torque hard like wayne said, 185 #. so tighten her up. then make sure it still spins freely. you may need a new bearing, and they're expensive. about $125.
yea i finally got a hub turns out oriellys was backordered about 500 or so but the dodge guy told me to check out carquest and sure enough go one for about 120 the dealer wanted 170 which isnt so bad but thanks about to put it on ill let yall know how it turns out
