I ordered a double roller, its just 7x cheeper than a gear drive. Im gonna be in there again for the cam and whatnot later anyways, so if theres a problem Ill address it then. I tore down the front and im stuck on pulling the vib dampener. I didnt grab a jaw gear puller before I started. Tomorrow Ill grab one and call it a day. Its O.O.S. untill I get the chain anyways. The waterpump/timing chain is a pita if you dont have the proper tools. Some people say to get a 16" waterpump wrench, which I did just because I needed to get a larger adjustable at the time, but you dont need to do that. If you need to remove the clutch fan just take an open end wrench and put the teeth on one of the bolts, and rest the neck on another and give opposite force as your wrench on the clutch nut. Iv done it before and I was having success, but then I bought an easier tool to use.

oh, does anyone know if when I take off the vib. dampener, if I have to mark where it was for re-instilation?

Did you say you were using a jaw style puller to get your balancer off?
If you use one of those 3 jaw pullers you will wreck your balancer. It will pull the outer ring off.
You want a bolt style puller (like a steering wheel puller) You can rent (sometimes for free) tools from some parts supply stores. While you there borrow a balancer installer too. Pounding it back on is hard on the crank bearings.

Good luck

the harmonic balancer, crank and cam sprocket are all keyed, so they can only go on one way, although some timing chain sets have an option for a 4 deg timing advance. the only way you can really mess up is to not align the timing marks on the 2 sprockets.
--don't pull on the outside of the balancer with a puller. it will destroy it. (i've done it). pull on the inside with a steering wheel/balance puller. protect the cranks inner threads with some washers. you don't want to mess up those threads...
here's some pics..

forget the jaw puller, you'll never get it off. go get the right puller... should be a standard balancer puller, autozone should be able to rent you one for free. that's where I got mine when I did my timing chain.

yea, thats what I got. I went in with the intent on getting a 2 jaw puller, and saw the dampener puller right next to it and a light went off in my head

my 2000 had a different pulley setup than the 99 & older trucks... I couldnt use the one you ended up getting and stumbled onto it while at autozone. once Jr had it on there, we pulled it off in minutes.
