what will cause surging
Sorry - been gone awhile. I'm dragging this up again to see if anyone has any further ideas about this issue. I am also curious if another tune-up with Mopar cap and rotor and MSD wires and Autolite plugs would make any difference. I did a tune-up(cap - rotor - wires - plugs) about 4-5k miles ago butjust used Autozone parts and Champion plugs. Willing to do it again but am not sure if worth it. Thanks for any further input.

bill im going to look into my timing as well if your having alot of the issues im having i wonder if were dealing with the same issue. i have to say my truck was a dog when i bought it i was geting ready to get rid of it but then i found that i had a vacuum leak at my evap canister so i took care of that and it made a difference but still wasnt fully pleased but i did the tps mod and i love the way my throttle feels now its real nice. im still looking for some more gain but im going to do a new tune up with the mopar cap and rotor and the msd wires and the autolite plugs with a new coil and the 180 t- stat and see were i end up. i think with this fairly cheap setup i should see some noticable difference. i always heard that rams were very peticular with the tune up parts that are used. so i assume if this is true it could be why the truck runs ok when it should be towing and driving no problem. so in the mean time bill ill keep you updated with what i find and you do the same thanks

I dont believe any of those parts would cause surging, the cap & rotor may not last all that long (I'd stick with mopar on that one). how is it surging again? the most common problem is a bad TPS but I'm sure that must have been covered on page1
This problem originated on rango726's truck but mine has a similar issue. Basically when you take your foot off the brake pedal and let the truck roll, it bucks and and almost feels like a misfire. But if you press on the brake pedal and stop, the idle is smooth. No CE light or codes - both trucks have had : full tune-ups (with possibly cheap quality parts) - new cyl. heads - newTPS - cleaned IAC valve. The reason I got interested was because my truck was theone with the timing fluctuation issue and was wondering if there could be a common cause for both issues.
did you check the compression on the cylinders after the head swap? you could have a low cylinder pressure on one or two cylinders. kinda doubt it but it's worth mentioning. which heads did you put on?
Compression is all good : mine was re-checked after the heads were replaced. The cyl heads were stock new heads from a local cyl head shop but don't really know what kind / brand. I know this is / seems like a really minor issue but my main question is if this could be tied to the fluctuating timing reading I still get when reading it on my scanner. Mainly, I guess I am just wondering if anyone else had ever run into this before.
im still dealing with the surging i havent found a cure yet. i did the tps mod and it made an improvement in power i also just did the 180 t stat and coolant flush and i noticed more throtle response. im just slowly plugging away at different things every week or so. i also found out that im dealing with a torque converter lockup issue. if i hammer down on my truck and let it really get going when it reaches the point were it should finally shift into od it starts revving up and down almost like a car hitting its rev limiter. my tranny guy says its an electrical issue which is his way of blaming a sensor. any ideas on that one guys. every once in a while my truck will still idle eratic until i give the gas a little tap and then it will level out but sometimes if i drive it and then stop and put ti in park it will stay at 1000 rpm until i tap the gas. that ones got my puzzled. but nothing on the surging. my truck still seems very doggish towing on the highway i have a hard time keeping it at 60mph but in the city it tows like a dream. and without the trailer the throttle is much more responsive. i have actually been going through alot less gas because of the 2 mods i am able to use less throttle to get the truck going resulting in less fuel usage.
