Default Failed 46RE in '01 1500

First off ... I tried searching and couldn't come up with what I wanted to find.

I have an '01 Dodge 1500 4x4 quad cab (5.2L, 46RE- 95K miles now). Last Feb. the trans went out, slipping in all forward gears plus slam shifts. I had it rebuilt by a big name local shop to the tune of $1800. A few months ago the trans went out again ... just after the 12mo/12K warranty expired (I was at 17mo/17K).[:@] This time reverse is gone ... as in acts like neutral. I'm out of warranty so the shop won't help. All forward gears act just fine, fluid looks normal, no burnt smell - just no reverse.

Is it worth throwing additional money at this trans? I have started looking for a replacement trans but I'm getting conflicting reports on what will work. My local salvage yard is telling me for the wiring to work only an '00 or '01 trans from behind a 5.2L will work. Online shops selling rebuilt transmissions show '96-'01 as being the same. I can't afford to sink more than $1K into this truck and I need it to last another 3 years and 36K miles until I have it paid off to unload it.

Thoughts?

Thats why you never have a trans rebuilt by a "big name"

Ive herd too many storys about rebuilt trannys going out too soon...
If I were you, i would call up dr evil tannys, or other dodge tranny companys and have them build you a tougher than stock tranny.... It will be just like the origional, the origional isnt really THAT bad, there is just a few little things that make it go out soon... they will take care of that and I bet just a more baseline tranny will only be around 1600- 1800 dollars.

This is the "big name" shop around here ... they are ATRA certified. If anyone is familiar with the Johnstown PA region the shop was JATS Transmissions.

I can't afford to sink another $1800 into the truck ... I've got max $1K to work with to put the truck back on the road. I'm still making payments on the POS, so that keeps a lot of cash tied up.

See if you can find the problem and do it yourself with the transmission manual. Are there any codes? You might need to drop the tranny and pull it apart, looking for the problem. Finda replacement part andgo from there. Hopefully you have a shop to work in and some time on your hands though. Have you checked theleverarm on the valve body for stuff interfering with movement?

There were no codes when my 01 1500 went..., but your suggesting that he diagnose this himself? No offense OP if your capable, but personally this is one thing I dontwouldn't wantto wing. I would get the bulletproof trans as suggested earlier. Thats what im going to do when this one dies again... (not looking forward to that, but I know it will) It cost me $2800 with a new torque converter because the OD ring snapped and shreaded. Messed up the clutches and ... there went a hole in my pocket. Mine was also done at an ATRA certified place that gives the same warrenty. Mine was done over in coatesville pa. I'm glad its done, but it doesnt shift the same anymore. Also!!! I was shocked to find out that the rebuilder shop was planning to put in ATF + 3 instead of the required ATF+4. Luckly I caught them before they did it. Aparently they use ATF + 3 with a friction modifier to aparently bring it to ATF +4 specs which actually almost pissed me off. I mean, it calls for ATF 4, so put it in!!! There defense was "Well we never really saw a lot of the older dodges, we only started seeing them after they changed to the ATF+4, which we suspect may cause transmission failure." So i got bent over another 100 bux so they could put in ATF + 4. I would like to know how a non-synthetic atf+3 when added with a friction modifer magically turns into a semi-senthetic atf+4. hmm... lol, well good luck!

There's no way I can tear into the trans ... I have no garage for starters. I can do swaps but I'm not up for gutting an auto trans even if I had a place to work on it.

Can anyone confirm which years are interchangeable?

Salvage yard says only '00-'01 with a 5.2L due to the trans wiring harness ... other sources show all '96-'01 46RE as interchangeable.

I've only got $1K or less to work with so it's either swap in another trans or have a shop look at this one.
