Dodge Ram Runs Rough (missing)
Ok... first of all, I just bought this truck. 1995 Dodge Ram 2wd, V-6, 131k from the second owner. He put 54k on it in 7 years of ownership. He is 39 and bought it from his Dad (original owner).
Problem... it is missing and running rough. At a idle there is VERY little shake to the engine, however when gas is applied... a definate miss is there. Miss seems to disappear at about 3500 rpms. When driving it miss's like heck till about 45...soon as it goes into OD it gets REAL BAD! Push the OD button and miss seems to go away. Pulled all the plugs and inspected. All seemed fine (champions). Plug wires look good. There is NO engine light on (that would be to easy). Compression on all cylinders is 145 (+ or - 5). Just for giggles I pulled one plug wire and started it. Very little difference in performance. Plugged that one back in and pulled a different wire and started again... same thing!
So... truck seems to run real close to the same with all wires connected as with only 5 connected! Stumped? I sure as heck am... HELP...PLEASE!!!

The only input I can put in is I don't think it's a miss. The computer would definetly throw a code. I wonder if your transmision is shifting at the wrong points causing the engine to bog down. Check you cat. When the truck is warm use one of those laser thermoeters and measure the front and back of the cat. There should be a big differnce in temperature.
if you yanked a couple of plug wires and it runs the same, means the cylinders are not firing right... 1st off check the wires or replace them with MSD's and swap the plugs for autolite 3923's. get a mopar cap & rotor. then if you still have a miss then look at the coil. I'm basiclly telling you to tune it up so you know where you are as far as that goes.
Thanks for the input to you both... I read on your sister site about the possibility of the Cat being clogged. But, I have since talked to the owner again (good friend of mine)... last tune-up was about 65k ago... done at dealership. So, I will upgrade to the suggested autolite plugs and MSD wires (assuming that MSD's are a brand name???). And WHY in the heck did mopar put the darn cap/rotor in such a poor location. Bet the engineer of that is STILL laughing as I type!

you can check the cat by using a temp sensing gun and measure the inlet & outlet temps... outlet temps should be 10+ deg hotter than the input. if the input is hotter, the cat is clogged.
I do NOT have access to any type of temp sensor for the Cat... any other "home-made" ways to check that???
And, Thanks for all the information! You have all given me more than I had really hoped for!

your next best bet is to take it to a muffler shop, they'll have the tools to check it. I would strongly suggest the temp test over the pressure test. but 1st off check your tuneup... and make sure it's good.
Well, robbed Peter to pay Paul. Got the parts today and just installed them. Autolite plugs (gapped at .035) upgraded wires, upgraded cap and rotor. Also, I followed a firing order that I found on here. Looking at the front... left side of motor 2-4-6 and right (pass) side 1-3-5... and on the cap 1-6-5-4-3-2... checking now for crossed wire... but if NOT... What is next?
