If the chain broke... it should just drop in place (unlike winch cable or tow straps.

Might be a dumb question but what are rocks? Is that a manufacturer of axles or a figure of speech?
Keep in mind, those 9.00R20 NDT tires are 40" tall.
Chains are not *suppose* to be bad when they break but they are...Reason being they're not (again) *suppose* to store energy, meaning they don't stretch. Just like a winch line, but they do.
Just for the record I never use a chain, its always tow straps.
I've seen a winch line break though, it has quite a bit of recoil but not as much as I thought. You would defenately be hurting if it hit you though. It just shot back and hit the back of the truck and front of the Jeep. Didn't break any windows or even dent either one.

This is an awesome tug-o-war video I found on Myspace vidsbetween a Ramand a F-650. Ram keeps coming up into a wheeliefrom drag slicks and what looks to be a bad pull angle.

What an ugly beasty buldging ram.
I use a chain, I tend to break the nylon straps. my last pro-comp looked like a rubber band snapping. I am in the market again for another 15' 20,000lb (non-elastic) strap. I use the chain to pull fallentrees from the woods and straps for applications where a chain would destroy whatever i am pulling. This weekend i snapped my pro-comp on a meduim sized bush, it wentabout 10' backbut notfast enough to kill or even dent the truck, the nylon was weakend by an oldknot that i could never get out.
I know I would never use a cable... those i have seen snap and its scary.
I got some 20 ft nylon straps rated at 35,000 lbs and they've done right by me. I don't try to pull f650s or anything, but I've pulled some trees out and my buddies trucks out no problem.
the dodge had soft race tires slight advantage and/w rocks low gaers, def prolly could have done it i 2wd.also i think pinion axles are illegle cuz there could be a mech faliure between the brakes and tires when they could b directly bolted onto the wheel(stock).
i just love tug of war. also what is wrong with a chain?
