Default belt tensioner

ok ive got kind of a dumb question....

ok thebelt tentioneris supposed to be spring loaded right, not one of the ones where you half to pull it back then tighten a bolt to hold it there....i have been noticing my belt starting to squeal when i start up the truck or turn sharp so figured it was time for a new belt, went to put it on but when i put my wrench onto the idler to remove the tension it just stayed wherever i moved it too (if i loosen it off it would stay loose or if i tightened it against the belt it would stay tight) so i figure its time for a new idler assy, jut just wanna double check that it is supposed to be spring loaded

uhhh yeah I'd be changing that tensioner real quick.
As far as I can remember they are always under load .
They shouldn't just move and stay back , they should spring forward aginst the belt.

+1

It's spring loaded.

There's a write up on it in Steve's DIY section if you want to read thru it.

You mention the "idler pulley" but are describing the "tensioner". Are you sure you're on the right one? The idler does NOT move to adjust the belt.
Just a thought.
