Default Here goes my tax refund..... (remote mount turbo setup)

Ok these have to be way too go to be true, Ive been looking at them on youtube and off of a few sights that I have found from a google search. Ive attached one of these sights as a link hopefully it works. I have yet to find a model avail for our trucks but Im starting to get the itch to try and fab up one with a similar idea, off of a existing kit for the third gen Hemi's. I have a ton of questions in my head right now as to how I could get it to work but boy I would sure like to know what all you out there think. I did a search on this but I didnt come up with any info, Im sure that some of you know of these already but its all news to me so far.

Granted theits only running 5lbs of boost, but jeez that would bring my truck to life, the major down fall is that it mounts under neath the body whichis a bit ofa catch 22. Since its under the truckyou can get away with lower tempsboth exhaust and under hood temps; but this is right in the way for wheeling, mudding,H2O, and dirt and dust in general.

Check it out and let me know what you all think or if u have one!!!!

i think i would go with there universal system its only 2999 as opposed to 4195....but if your going to spend that much why not go with a supercharger, there around 4-5 grand would be completely under hood and some offer 14+ lbs boost if you wanna go that high

the universal system IS the way to go. remember your going to have to fab stuff up either way. I would stay away from any forced induction system unless your planning on upgrading your headgaskets.

watch this video and you'll know what i mean.

That video is pretty sweet. I guess these engines arn't made to handle a turbo. Is there any way to make it so that they can do it without blowing up.

The headgaskets are the biggest obsticle when putting in low psi, so they would be the thing to replace. If you want to run anything higher than 8 (just my guess) Id recomend getting a forged bottom end. Id really like to run a single turbo setup of my own, but I cant force myself to do it without getting at the very least RT heads. Also to keep in mind, a rear mounted turbo will have more lag and less efficiancy than a turbo mounted close to the head. The problem with rear mounts is that by the time exhaust gasses reach the turbo some of the heat has dissapated, which makes for a less dense charge to turn the turbine, therefore less velocity on the intake side as well. In my case I was thinking of welding a 3bolt header flange to the turbo and making a short Y pipe for my exhaust with a 3 bolt flange on the end, and just bolting it right up, and throw my flowmaster right behind that and dump it. Unfortunately I spent the money on headers, so Im not going to get rid of them.

the exhaust turbos are a waste.. much much less efficient than a normal set-up

for that amount of money you can purchase a turbo and get someone to custom fab you an underhood system..

keep in mind you will prob. need a PCM re-flash as well or a custom tune..

Dont get me wrong, theres no way im paying 3k for a set up like this, my thoughts are kinda leaning towards going with some form of a mix and match set up. I just had the top end of the truck all taken care of a few months ago, headgaskets, intakes, plenum, timing chain and so on. So with only five lbs of boost Im not too worried. Im not looking to make a drag truck out of mine, just make it a little more powerfull.

Heres what STS says about the position of the turbo.
"Our turbochargers are sized to operate at this remote location. Just like any turbocharger, once the turbo is up to temperature and in the rpm range for which it was designed to operate. The boost comes on hard and fast. All of our systems will produce full boost below 3000 rpm. If you were to take a conventional turbo and place it at the rear, you would have lots of lag and consequently, our turbo wouldn't work properly if mounted up front."

And one more....
"With so long of intake and exhaust tubes, doesn't it take a while for the boost to build up?
No, our intake tubing volume is about the same as most conventional turbo setups that are running a front mounted intercooler, and less than many of them that run large intercoolers. We aren't talking about a small compressor filling up a large air tank, we are talking about a huge compressor filling up a very small volume which only takes a fraction of a second. Our systems compress the intake tubing in about .05 seconds. So much for turbo lag..."

Now Im sure that theres some special/creative writing in those statement but unless I were to get my hands on one of these I have no way to tell what kind of turbo they are providing, I think that they are Garrett units. I spent some more time on their sight and found other videos, demo's, and testimonials of their products.... but are they really accurate? Im a firm believer of if it was easy everyone would be doing it so I too am still a skeptic in this but Im still interested in the theroy.

This is still just a running thought that sounds like it would be a fun thing to have, but I dont know what it would cost in the end if i were to put one together from scratch. It might be cheeper to find a stroker kit and go that route first....

Heres a few more links with some good info:

Im seriously thinking of doing this.... For every 1 lbs of boost, you can add %10 increase in power. And at 5280 ft above sea level Im even more excited to try this.
