Hey guys,
I was thinking about putting a cold air intake on my truck and was wondering if it just adds a few horsepower to it or will I see a small increase in MPG also? I was looking at one on e-bay someone else on here had mentioned before and was wondering about how good it is? Any ideas on what is a good one? I dont really want to spend $300.00 for one. This one is only the one I am looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-01...QQcmdZViewItem
I also posted last night I am going to put on a set of headers and a new dual exhaust. Any suggestions on which headers to buy? I was looking at some on Summit racing for $149.99. Here is the link: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1∂=SUM%2DG9045&N=7 00+4294908110+4294907804+4294924677+4294840106+429 4923429+115&autoview=sku
Does my truck have a O2 sensor after the cat or just before the cat system? I want to increase my milage as much as possible since I am pulling my camper with this truck and my milage dropped down to about 8 mpg this weekend. Can you say OUCH? I did. But we had fun anyway and saved on the cost of a hotel.
I am open to other ideas that are not unreasonable in price.

You probably will not see big mileage gains, but you will see big HP gains with just the cold air intake. I put a drop in filter from K&N and saw no gains in MPG. Significant HP gains.
Air in Air out is the rule. If you put on headers (be careful) and a new exhaust you will probably go up 1 or 2 mpg. Remember, you engine (5.9?) was not created for high mpg. Mine has gotten as high as 18, but mostly gets 16-17. I have stock exhaust (original from 1995) and 190k.
After those improvements you will probably get less mpg because you will be playing with it!!! Hittin' the hammer on on ramps and such.

y not do the round filter? i had that on my second gen and found it to be the best for performance... as stated before your not really gonna see much in mpg no matter what you use....

Round filters are the way to go with these trucks. Specifically because of the Keg style intake.A round air cleaner is going to prevail over a cold air intake, and it's significantly less expensive.
Probably around $75 for the whole setup and 30 of that is a K&N fiter for it. You go with the paper one theygive you it's about $45

It is hard to see an mpg increase when you feel the new hp gain, but yes it does,
very small thou, you may not notice it in and of itself.
I'd recommend a high performance cap and rotor, and some 10mm Taylor wires,
then put some 2x platinum plugs in it and run synthetic oil, now you should see
something IF you can keep your foot light.
That's the whole problem, you will have SO much power...
Resist this and you gain mpg, tricky, tricky
I'm considering racing seats ($60).
Maybe a carbon fiber hood (not cheap, $500...)

I found that the round A/C was the best bang for the buck. No real increase in the MPG, but the truck was a LOT more responsive!
You can see a few pics of it in my Photo Gallery

I installed the 14" round filter and love the throttle response. I bought the whole setup off of EBAY for $20. best bang for your buck.

i just ordered a round air filter from summit and spent $92 delivered to my door on it, but it the best looking one out there. As far as those headers i believe "MoparKid" installed those and sayed that they were great, and when i get more money i plan on installing those same headers your looking at, if you dont like them summit takes returns.ORIGINAL: petekf4qoe

Wouldn't the round filter be sucking in hot ait off the top of the motor? Wouldn't that decrease performance?ORIGINAL: tdmopar59

Well guys I have the K&N FIPK, and I like it. Definitly more usable power. My opinion says that a round air intake would do better if you removed the rubber flaps on both sides of the radiator to get alot more cooler air flow into those throttle bodies..........
