shifter indicator reads off do you know how to fix this?

i changed my heater core and dropped my steering wheel , i thinked it triggered something when i dropped my steering wheel,now the shift indicator reads off, for example, when i have it in 1st the indicator reads D , do you know how to correct this?

easy fix. remove the knee knocker panel under the steering wheel and look for the white plastic star wheel with the cable attached to it. you might have a cable routing problem, or you might just need to adjust the star wheel to line it back up. if you remove it, pay very close attention to the arrangement of the 2 or 3 little pieces, or else it takes some thought to get it back together right. it baffled me for a few minutes.
