Default Tire Sizes Stock VS Optional Ram 1500

Need some advice on tires, as per dos and don'ts. I have a 94 Ram 5.2, Auto 1500 Magnum SLT, RWD. I am in need of a set of tires, and have always leaned toward Michelin, as the do the job for me and the wear is fantastic. The ones that I currently have on my Truck have in excess of 100,000 miles on them and are down to the wear bars. So replacementtires arein need. I have looked at and have always bought my Tires at Costco, and always Michelin Brand. The tires I have on the Truck at presentare 23575 R 16. I wanted to replace them with 245 R 75 16. The stock size was original 225 75 R16. According to the tire chart it states that the 245 75 R 16, will actually be travelling at 62.5 MPH, when the Speedo shows 60 MPH. Costco will not install these 245s. Now again on the Tire Chart it shows that my Truck had an optional Tire size which was 245 75 R 16. Can anyone tell me why this 245 cannot be installed and why. Sorry one last question is there still a LT 235 75 R 16, that can be had, as I do a lot of travelling and pull a Car Trailer, and am interested in good wear and safety, thank you. Hope this isn't all confusing.

You can fit up to a 265/75/16 on there but as your tire changes, so does the speedo variance. Gave my stock sport wheels and tires to a guy I work with that has a 2wd 6 cyl. truck. Fills up the wheelwells nice. It's not enough to worry about. Only a couple of mph. The guy is being a *****. Show up when the young guys that don't care are working and watch there work so they don't strip the lug nuts.

Chopper

Thanks for the reply on the tire sizes. What I was really looking for is an answer to why Costco won't fit 245 75 R 16, on my Truck as they were an optional tire size.
The Stock size on the door post is 225 75 R 16. They again its over the 3% allowable. I just use my Truck for travel purposes and pull a car float. My trips are 3-4 times a year and some in excess of 3500 miles each. So I want a good tire under my truck.

I know some states only allow you to deviate from the stock size by a certain amount of sizes or a percentage. I know in my state you can only go over the stock size by two sizes. The way lawmakers see it if it did'nt come on it from the factory it should'nt be there. And the guy at Costco is obviouslyby the book. Buy your tires there and then have a garage install them.

Hi OleGoat, Kurrz96ram is know doubt right on with his reply. I have a 98 ram with the 245/75-16 option. I think you can go to a dodge dealer after you got the tires installed and they can plug their 'puter into the truck and calibrate the speedo for you.

Give them a call and tell themwhat you are thinking about doingand get a price.

costco has been doing this for a long time.

they do it for liability reasons. not sure why.

anywho.
buy your tires online from somewhere like tirerack.com and have someone mount them other than costco.

and i run a 245/70 and my speedo is dead on, this is the same ratio as the stock tires so it keeps the speedo correct.

ALSO:
costco sells tires online, and it lets u choose the optional tire size.. not sure about the selection though, but if u wanted to stay with costco its an option..

Thanks guys for all your input, sure appreciate it. Guess I'll have to get my mind made up and go with the best possible choice without compromising the safety issue.

There is no saftey issue with running the differnt tire. Costco won't install any tire size on your truck other then the ones that you already have on there. I think it’s because they are a bigger company with a lot of money. In today’s society if anything goes wrong you could try and blame Costco for it and maybe even win in a lawsuit even though it wasn’t their fault. If they force you to run the same size tire you had originally then there isn’t anything you can blame them for if something wears out faster.

thats what i was trying to say..

and the safety issue being someone like my buddy:

trying to buy a tire that has a lower speed rating and cheaper when his car required the higher speed rated tire, even though he never gets his car above 80 mph..
