Default Tranny problems

I have a 98 4x4. It has about 270,000 k on it. Lately I have been getting some of the dreaded convertor shudder. The shudder is there with either overdrive on or off and starts at about 62 kph. There are also some other symptoms. On a cold start, there is a vibration noise coming from front of the tranny. When I shift it to reverse, neutral or drive there is a whining noise for about 10 seconds then it goes away. This noise is not as bad if I let the truck warm up for about 15 minutes. Yes I am in a cold climate. There is no slipping in any gear other than when you first put it in gear on a cold start.

Any suggestions? Can I fix this myself, keeping in mind that I rebuilt a 727 successfully in a high horsepower application?

Thanks

Jack

I would say fix it immediately, if you fix it now all you will really need to do is reseal the clutch packs unless there is something else wore out

I got 104K on my tranny. No idea if its the original tranny or if its been rebuilt. I get that rattle sound when I take it out of park and go in to reverse. I put it in reverse firstbecause its garaged, but i let it warm up for a good 10mins (remote starter shutoff time), but it goes away by the time the cab starts to exit the garage. Thats normally the only time I notice it, its also mid winter here in CT. I don't notice any tranny issues, no leaks, no shutter, and nothing out of the ordinary for a dodge tranny with 104K on it. Is this noise a sign its due for routine maint?? Filter and new Mopar tranny oil, and..?

Okay, wait, there is one more thing I noticed. I was at a red light and some young fella in a civic with one of those lawn mower exhausts was next to me, so I gave him a little taste of the 360ci. After the first 100ft and 8 gallons later I noticed that I hit the rev limiter in 1st gear and it never shifted in to second until I went to about 3/4 throttle, then I could stuff it back to the floor and it then shifted as expected in to 3rd. This normal for a truck in its current condition (bone stock 104K)?
I just got the truck about 3month ago, and found out the previous owner (service shop manager) sold it to me with two bad front barings ($840). I would like to personally thank him the next time I head uphis way [:@][:@][:@]. The guys at the garage said it was at an unsafe point. But with used cars, buyer beware. So, this might be sign that the tranny wasn't cared for. I am seriously thinking of slapping a new track bar and selling it and getting another truck.

Oh, thats fantastic. I just got this truck. I have always been a fan of another brand (I don't dare mention it in the dodge forum), and knew I might have jumped the gun. Thats why the rams are so much cheaper to buy. This will be the last RAM for me. My previous 2 trucks lasted well in to the upper 180K's without any issues aside from routine stuff, like brakes and tires. Okay, one of them needed a u-joint replaced but i did that $20 later.
I might have to sit the wife down and "eat crow" about the "reliable family sized" truck I just bought. granted i didn't spend a lot, but with our third addition to the family coming, its going to hit the fan here.
I just commute daily and got this truck because it has the Quad Cab and can fit the kiddies in there without throwing them over the passenger seat .
I wanted to tow a mid-sized camper and from what i am hearing, that this middle aged truck is not up for such work.

Well welcome to the dodge world they break alot and they suck gas. My tranny went at about 14,000milesafter buying the truck. They hurt the wallet, i wish i would have bought a chevy, but its too late. I still like my truck in the end

okay, well you mentioned another truck maker... so i guess I can. I had an 88 ranger 2.9l 5pd 4x4. It had 22,000 on it when i got it, and i rolled it over in an ice storm and it had 188,000. Sold it for $2500. but it was the best little truck I ever had. (also had the infamous Dodge RAMPAGE 2.2L the biggest junker i ever owned)
then got a 95 F150 5.0L 4x4, got that with 47,000 and drove that until it had 181,000. I sold that because I started to commute 45miles one way to a new job. I regret getting rid of it, but needed to use it as a trade in.

I think my next setup will be a f250 diesel like my father in-laws. he has 210,000K on his 99. just put his first new parts in it. ball joints and an alternator. I think thats far better than replacing transmission. he also tows a 10K GVWR dump trailer about 1x a week.

ugh... [sm=bangbang.gif]

Any want a 98 Ram for $6500, with new front bearings and a soon to be installed track-bar conversion kit?

I would go with the a 93 f250 Diesel, First and only year of the turbocharged International 7.3, no powerjoke junk. Next would be a 94-98 1/2 12 valve cummins 2nd gen and a standard tranny
