RE: Tranny problems
honestly, and I am going to be the one to say it... when others just think it.
I like my Ram, but I would love a F250/350.
I have ford taste, but RAM money.
Some of us in the 2nd gen will admit to the the history and reputation that Dodge got from them. I should have done more research on the truck I got. I figured the trackbar was a 100K replacement item, and since the tranny seemed okay it wasn't one of the many lemons out there. But after getting the truck I found forum after forum of owners who had the RAMs with just 1800 miles on it losing the tranny and had the rear end lock up, or the tranny go, then later on at 50K have the plenum go, then wheel bearings, then tranny (did I already mention that). So far I am slowly following the trend. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I love the styling and useability of the 4dr quad cab and not have to get a 2nd mortgage for it.
just praying to the truck gods that this truck lasts 2 more years so i can get something else.
How are the Dakotas? What are they able to tow? I heard the new ones can tow as much as its bigger brother, the 1500.
If they made the ranger the size of the dakota with a diesel like the one in the Liberty, and a 6spd... heck while I am at it, I would like to be taller too.

RE: Tranny problems
Found this TSB on 94-97 regarding your noise, I get the same thing, but I don't care anymore. LOL
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1997/21-11-97.htm
Note the time for repairs: Time allowance: 2.7 hr, add 1.7 hr for 4X4
yikes.
I think it goes for later models beyond 97, since the TSB was posted sept 2, 1997. looks like more than what i can do with my basic garage tools.

RE: Tranny problems
I think its how you have taken care of the truck. I have 142,000 on the orginal tranny and i need to put in a new torque convertor cause of offroading, i have replaced a front wheel bearing, 3 u-joints, new calipers, rotors, and pads, they went shot from my last mudding/multiple deep pond hopping adventure. I have never had any of these serious problems like the tranny or wheel alignment, let me state though that with the history i know its common and even more so with wheel alignment. If i did all that i have done with my dodge in my 87 chevy 4x4, the truck would be destroyed. I would never give up this truck. It has taken beaten after beaten and still runs like new

RE: Tranny problems
If your transmission has a shudder there is a few things I would check before investing money into this trans. I would drop the transmission pan and look at the fluid. If there is metal present, like magnet covered, your T.C. lining has failed. New T.C. is the only fix. If the pan is clean I would recomend installing a Transgo shift kit. If you do not want to go that route then at least completely drain and refill trans. with Mopar ATF+4. As far as rebuilding the transmission, the 46RE is fairly straight forward other than the overdrive. I would recommend a press or buying the correct tool to service the OD spring. Good Luck, Nick
