I've been looking everywhere to find out what the shifting characteristics are of the 46RE transmission. Does anyone know what they are? Or would anyone be willing to post how there transmission shifts? My transmission seems healthy I just want to confirm by seeing how everyone else shifts.

Well what I really want to know is what RPM’s is it supposed to shift at when your at partial throttle, half throttle, and WOT. When I’m driving at partial it seems to shift like at 2200 RPM. The only thing that is weird is that at about 20 mph it shifts to second and then at like 22 mph it shifts to third and stays in third until 50. Everything seems smooth and semi normal I just wanted to know if it was supposed to shift that fast into third. The RPMs don’t drop very far when it shifts into third. I also verified this behavior by manual shifting in and out to see what gears it was in. When I’m going at WOT it shifts somewhere close to 5000 RPM and hits second around thirty and then third around 70. This is all with the OD on.

I know that. I'm not trying to change it I just want to make sure it's normal. The 2-3 shift concerns me. Especially since I just adjusted the bands.

Mine isn't shifting right and I know it's because I didn't get the band adjustment right. I also know that my torque converter is slipping. I'm waiting so I can get the transmission rebuilt.

Damn, I'm a transmission Noobie like Iceman! [:@]

I think we’re all transmission noobies. I did the adjustment a little bit differently. I read a write up on how to do it more acuretly then you can with a torque wrench. I had the damn pan twice because I foobared it the first time. The instructions were to tighten both bands until you couldn’t turn the driveshaft in either direction. Then loosen the bands just until you can turn it by hand then do another half turn. Well the first time I did the adjustment I though it said to tighten until you couldn’t turn the drive shaft and then loosen a half turn and your done. Ooops. I pulled out and drove forward and as soon as it shifted into second I knew something was wrong. It felt like the truck was fighting against itself. So I put it back into first and put it back in driveway and did it again. The second time felt a lot better. Nice firm shifts. I just was paying so much attention to the transmission that I noticed that at partial throttle it spends almost no time in second. I’m not sure if this is the way it’s always been or if I got the band adjustment wrong. The 2-3 shift seems normal as far as the RPMs don't go way out of whack.

Oh yea I really want to rebuild the transmision. I just have a really long trip at the end of the month so I can't do it until after. Ifound a rebuild kit at APS for $400 that willmake the transmision bulletproof. It actually look pretty easy to rebuild as long as you keep everything clean.

even if it did that before, it seems like you never notice it until after you work on the tranny. idk, i think mine stays in 2nd for not that long either, like, barely, but im a really BIG tranny noob:P

Yea I think I notice it now because I'm so concerned about the bands being adjusted correctly that I'm focusing on the transmision. I drive with the radio and heater off so that I can hear and feel every bump from the tranny.

Never saw those instructions. And yes, the key to rebuilding a transmission is to keep everything clean. My issue is that I can feels the bands slipping/binding slightly between 1-2 and 2-3 shift. I want to reinstall the check-valve, have the proper lines, a cooler, and a stronger torque converter. I may farm out the rebuild because I have other tasks that require my attention.
