Default power steering problems

yesterday my ps shat out on me....

bought the pump installed it got everything laced up etc...

when i started it, there was a rhythmic noise, almost like a banging...

i checked it out and nothing appears to be hitting against anything else (fan blade not hitting anything, pulley looks to be clear of everything)

could this be a result of air in the lines?

any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

It could be air in the lines or a totally unrelated problem. Did the new pump come with bleeding instructions (it should have)? Start the truck up, and turn the steering wheel lock to lock a dozen or so times and then check the fluid level. Add fluid and repeat. Then keep an eye on the fluid level for a few days. The pump is the high point of the system, so it should be pretty easy to get the air out.

Yah, it sounds like cavitation caused by air in the system. This is very much bad. Bleed it out like Ramtuff said.

it was late, i wanted to go to bed, that noise scared the **** out of me (last thing i wanna do is spend more $ on repairs 2 weeks before Christmas) so i cleaned up my tools and went to bed...

ill try bleeding it tonite if i get a chance, otherwise tomorrow nite.

Could be worse. Yesterday we nuked a brand new $5,000 electric motor cause nobody primed the hydraulic pump it was turning... Cavitation is hard on equipment.
