Default Just wondering...

When the time comes that I need a new tranny (notice I said 'when' not 'if'...I'm learning) what would be the cost differencebetween throwing in a 5spor rebuilding the 46RE? Would it be worth the trouble??? Just seems like if they're close the 5sp would be the way to go...

I am getting a rebuild hopefully next week. i got two quotes.
Company 1: master rebuild kit, w/heavy duty TC and shiftkit $2380(tx included)(add $230 for an add-on cooler), and 4 days in the garage.
Company 2: same setup $2500 (add 6% CT Tax) and 2days in the garage.

Your results may very. you don't need the heavy duty TQ if you are a daily commuter. but I opted for it since its a heavy truck and has a decent amount of torque. I wanted the shift kit to help save the clutches and help in towing. I would go for the cooler, but can't afford it now. I also get a1yr warranty.

98Dodgeram1500: Why don't you just buy an auxiliary cooler when your trans is done? The one I showed Ram2K1 is $45 for a complete install kit and is extremely simple to install.

Now, the trick to a 5spd swap is to find a parts truck that has everything in it that you need, buying all the parts separate can be a beotch.

honestly, the more I think about it, i am thinking that another $230 installed is worth it.
I asked the guy about it and me installing will void the 1yr warranty on the rebuild.
So I was going to wait a year.
they also have a black cooler so you don't see it when the hood is closed.
When I got my two quotes, niether shop suggested getting on unless I tow something. I asked about long term, and they both said that after the rebuild the tranny will out last the truck it self. one shop said that the motor and tranny would out last the rest of the truck. he must have been a 5.9 fan. thats the shop I am going with. The cooler they sell has a lifetime warranty. thats definately longer than I will own the truck.

I agree 100%, after you get the transmission rebuilt, there is nothing wrong with the engine (besides water pumps and plenum gaskets which aren't too big of a deal), the rest of the truck will rot out from under you before you have any problems with them. I just don't see how adding cooler could void the warranty though. I would wait a year and then install the cooler, a mid size cooler is one of the best things you can do for your tranny.

the shop with the 1yr warranty said, if i modify or alter anything afterwards it will void the warranty. they belong to some nation wide transmission warranty group thing.
I am going to ask if he can come down on the cooler. if not, then i will wait and do it myself.

is there a DIY for the cooler? I don't recall seeing one. would I have to drain fluid?

Also, what about one of these? Overkill for a daily commuter?

Definitely giving those serious consideration, also.

The only issue I see with that is shipping can't be cheap, and after paying that, how much better off (or not) are you than paying $2200-$2500 for a local area rebuild? Especially if you have a good shop close by... Still may be worth it, though... I'd be sold if I knew shipping wasn't an arm and a leg...
