4-wheel drive problem
Took my truck out in a wet field about 2 weeks ago to play with the 4 wheel drive for the first time in 7 months, when I was in 4 wheel low, or high it was kinda locking up and poping realy bad when i turned the wheel, so i took it to a mechanic and it was exactly what i thought.... Bad U-joints, and trust me they were horrible... Busted open and bairly there, any way i got that fixed and now the popping is gone... I havent gone back out in a field yet because i just got out of class about a hour ago and picked it up from the shop but when i tried it out on the pavement and when in 4-low its like theres hardly in power going to the front tires, when in 4 high it works alot better however in either 4 hi or low when you try turning it jerks the Sterring wheel around and it seems like somethings locking up... Either way it does not seem right to me but it could be because im on pavement but i still dont think it should be that bad off. Any sugestions? Or any one that had a problem similiar? Thanks for any help.
Also if you dont give it gas it slows to a halt almost like im applying the brakes slightly... There is no grinding sound when driving but there is grinding when switching into 4-wheel low... This is killing me right now...
Cant give much advice to your problem, other then itsnatural for there to be grinding when shifting into 4L. Mine does it[Once n awhile], and a few guys around here said not to worry about it. Someone correct me if im wrong though!
IF you are in 4low and on pavement you will have some rocking/hopping if you turn the wheels sharp. This is because each of the tires are pulling and they are fighting against each other. You don't notice it in the dirt and mud because it slips, but thepavement wont allow the tires to slip like dirt. This is the easiest way to make sure the 4 wheel drive is working. Sounds like to me it is working fine.
+1 its normal to feel a hop in 4wd on dry pavement. the best thing to do is take it off road and see if it still does it. grinding in 4lo is normal, just make sure when you are puttin it in 4 low that you dont stop in N, it should be one fluid motion.
When on asphalt or any hard surface in 4WD do not turn other than slightly!!!
The front wheels are pulling, when the wheel is turned they are travelling different distances and against each other. They get pissed and can bust a U-Joint.... As stated above, on dirt, mud or snow, the tires have slippage and don't affect each other. This can also happen on hard dirt. Turning hard will often **** them off even if there is some slippage. Our trucks have a tighter turning circle than most 4X4's and can bind the u-joints easier. Read the manual or visor tag on shifting. It is no issue on 4 high, but 4 lo will get better with practice. In neutral, stopped, engine at an idle, pull hard and fast. Some grind will happen as gears mesh. Some people inch off stopped while pulling.
In low range it will slow very quickly, 4H not as much but ther are 4 wheels and a transfer case gears that are now dragging on the motor..

turning while in 4lo on pavement is a good way to ruin your new ujoints.

Appreciate all the help fellas, i actually took the truck out today into some mud and it did damn good, didnt get stuck or anything so im assuming all is well by the way it worked in the conditions its ment to be used in....
