tranny whine in reverse
hey all....
got a question for ya'...
in the morning when i back out of my driveway,on my way to my wonderful job that i love so dearly....theres a whine coming from,my guess is the tranny.it will only whine when its not at operating temp and if im idleing in reverse.once i hit the throttle, the noise stops but will return when back at idle.tranny fluid is where its supposed to be but i dont know if its ever been changed.im at 73k and was gonna change it when i get the shift kit but thats gonna have to wait now.its a 46re and in rev is the only time it makes this peticular noise.
some also say that i shouldnt change the fluid.this makes no sense to me but i am not a mechanic by any means.
any thoughts and/or comments?
thanks and happy holidays

I know my truck is making a whine but that is from the power steering pump. It has been about 15 degrees around here. It only makes the noise on a cold start when the temp is 20 or below and goes away when it warms up.
First off, check you fluid level. Are there any other symptoms, or is the whine the only problem?
There's been quite a few complaints about a whine in reverse with these trannys. I believe there's a TSB for it, but it's not really an issue unless the sound annoys you.

Mine does the same thing ('99 1500 4x4). In fact, it did it when I bought it, and I later had to have the transmission rebuilt, and it still does it. It only does it when I am backing out of the driveway in the morning when it is cold. Only does it in reverse too.
Ever since my trans rebuild, I am very diligent about checking the fluid level, and changing it ever 24,000 miles. The noise is always there regardless, although I have noticed it is not as bad right after a fluid change.

mine does it to only in reverse and when it is cold out and truck not at normal operating temp. I just tap the gas when reversing and it goes away. Works everytime too. One day i did not and wanted to see how loud the sound would get (gets pretty loud). I remeber reading about this problem on the forums a while back there was like 30 people whom responded to the same happening to there trucks. one guy said it was not getting fluid or something and u have to put it into drive or neutral for about 30 sec before putting it into reverse to stop the noise, but another guy said it is just a nusance noise and woul not cause any damage to anything.

i have the same problem with my 96. drives me nuts. not that it matters at the moment since my truck is being repainted so i dont have it (pics will be posted eventually). as far as the dont flush it part...when tranny fluid has never been changed things build up in certain areas and when you finally do flush it the build up is moved to another area ans will sometimes tear up the insides.
The sound is normal. I have the same problem. Yes, there is a TSB for it. The problem is a valve in the tranny. No harm is being done so as said before you realy only need to fix it if it bothers you. Just keep you fluid level up.
